    For me it has varied.
When I had my first relapse in April '01, I was hospitalized for 10 days and after I got out I had about 5 dr appts in the next 6 months. Then a followup a year later with my MS specialist in Minneapolis. (I lived in Taiwan at the time but the neuros there weren't familiar with MS.)

Then I just checked in by email with my MS specialist a year later to say I was still doing well.

Then nothing till April 07 when I had another big relapse, saw a neuro who said I had MS, flew back to Minneapolis to see my trusted specialist (Dr. Schapiro) and that's when I got officially diagnosed and started meds. He gave me a referral to a specialist who lives closer to me (70 miles away). I went there twice a year for a couple years. When I saw him last December, he said I was doing great and didn't have to come back for a year ... but now I'm having another relapse so I went in Sept, going again in late Oct and again in December.
That's a very long answer to your question.
2001: 1st 2 relapses, "probable MS." 2007: 3rd relapse. Dx of RRMS confirmed by MS specialist. Started Cpx. (Off Cpx Feb 08-Mar 09 to start a family; twins!) Dec '09: Started Beta. Oct '13: Started Tecfidera. May '15: Considering Gilenya.

Right now I go every 3 mo. I havent had an MRI for about 6 mo now so I am not sure if they will do one soon again or wait a year that would be a good question to ask next time I go to see him.
Oh and I have 2 nuro's just incase I dont agree with one I go see what the other one thinks. I have trust issues with Dr's cant you tell?

Every 6 months, and we usually have a chatfest since we're friendly after all these years.

I never have MRIs anymore. The ONLY time he insists I get one is when I'm having a new symptom that involves my vision. I hate going into that machine, and he knows it. I usually wait until I can't take it anymore. The last time I went for a whole year with optic neuritis in my GOOD eye waiting for it to disappear on its own. It DOES happen...but not that time.
