FLARE UP OR PERI-MENOPAUSE - PLEASE RESPOND

    Hey Ladies,

I am 51 years young and going through peri-menopause as well as having, as my Neuro puts it "mild" ms.

My question I am not sure if I am having a flare up or if my symptoms are peri-menopause. I stay tensed up a LOT..which does cause muscle stiffness, tight muscles.

Its time for my cycle and OH BOY seems like my tightness/stiffness is 2x worst. Does hormones play a role in causing ms flares..making the muscles more stiff/tight.

I take a low dose Ativan which seems to help but sometimes very little - but when it wears off, I am back to square one.. body stiffness/tightness. Will Baclofen help better than Ativan..PLEASE HELP..

I am trying to get ready for work and my body is so TIGHT AND STIFF.. Getting ready to take Ativan and pray it helps.

I pray I get some responses...

    Ms. Jay

    Hello Ms. Jay,

Hormonal fluctuations can cause an increase of MS symptoms but it is not a true flare-up (exacerbation, attack relapse). It is temporary due to the hormonal fluctuations and can happen, for some, at both ovulation and/or menses.

What symptoms you experience would depend on your current symptoms. If you normally deal with stiffness/tightness (spasticity) hormonal fluctuations can make those symptoms worse. It is possible for other symptoms not normally seen to show up at this time...depends on the person.

Baclofen might help. Baclofen and Ativan can be taken together. Please be aware that the combo can make you more tired.

Women of all ages can experience an increase of symptoms due to hormonal flutuations.

        You are very welcome

You mention quite often about stiffness and tension. I believe in your neck and back?

If so, have you tried stretching with resistance bands (Pilates Bands)? They can be helpful for relieving stiffness/tightness. Physical Therapists (PT) also use resistance bands in their practice. A PT could show you how to correctly use the bands.

        Just a thought

          Response

Peri-menopause messes with your world. I had major issues 8 days before I would start my period every month. Like, I would have to be out of work for almost a week every time (vertigo, vomiting, useless right side) - and I was so irregular that there was no rhyme or reason to it. (Except I did know that I could set a clock as to when I was going to start - 8 days and @3 hours from the first time I would vomit.)

I got my hormones tested and they (my gyno) put me on a daily cream that balanced everything out. Within a week, I noticed a difference and within a month I was no longer having to call in. Have only called in twice in the last two years now - for one day only.

It's worth a try. But I would definitely go through your doc to deal with it though. - Good luck with anything you try - this whole process sucks. (But I am now SO happy with even small successes!!!)

The tension is mainly is my neck/shoulder and as a result, I have tension knots in my neck..one in particular on the right side of my neck is awful - it feels VERY tight and hard like a rope tied tight...JUST AWFUL.

I may have to look into getting Pilates Bands..never thought of that. I had PT but the Physical Therapist was not that good. He was suppose to be a specialist in dealing with MS patients.... I could not tell..

I got my hormones tested and my results were normal.. not sure how but they came out normal. I will call my doc office to get the actual numbers.

My GYN doc told me I do not need to be on HRT not until I reach actual menopause..not while I am in peri-menopause.. that's when women need it the most while in peri-menopause.. go figure..

My doctor gave me HRT without even checking my hormones. I was having hot flashes, night sweats, no interest in sex. The HRT had worked on everything but the sex much to my husbands chagrin!

I get tight muscles in my shoulders a lot from sitting at a computer everyday at work. Light massage helps me a lot. I can't stand it if it is too hard though - it just causes me to hurt worse.
