    Rebif eases symptoms?

I read in the Edmonton paper today, a letter from a person who is taking Rebif and claimed that it, Rebif, was supposed to reduce symtoms of MS by 30%. Anyone else ever heard of this?

I've heard of that, but only because that statement is a common misinterpretation of what Rebif and the other CRABs are supposed to do. It's the kind of error made by someone who either doesn't know what the purpose of Rebif is (and really thinks it's a symptom-relief med), doesn't understand what "symptoms" are, and/or is confusing the meanings of "relapse" and "symptoms."

The reason you may not have heard that before is because it isn't true. Rebif and the other CRAB drugs are not meds for symptom relief (although some people get symptom relief if the drug works to "calm" the disease).

The correct statement is that, overall (your mileage may vary), Rebif and the other CRABs reduce relapses and slow the progression of MS by about 30%. That doesn't clinically translate into the reduction of symptoms, and none of the meds is claimed to deliver relief of symptoms. The writer of the letter is mistaken.
