Anyone using a good device for opening jars, etc?

    Hello

I am having great difficulty opening jars and twist top bottles (juice, water, etc.)

I was almost in tears yesterday trying to open a twist top orange juice bottle 16 oz which I picked up at the carryout (I was too tired to do grocery shopping that day for the large carton of juice!)

I also get pure cranberry juice in a glass bottle which gives me fits trying to open.

Anyone using a multi-purpose opener that is easy to use and functional for jars and twist tops?

    Thanks,

    koko,
anything with a large top, use an oil filter tightener. they are cheap, easy to find (automotive dept), and they work! it`s a tool that you just slip around the cap, and pull the lever to tighten and turn. for stubborn (most) caps, put a rubber husband over the cap first. good luck.

I use those rubber things that are given out by many companies. I also use that waffle looking thing. They are sold to put under throw rugs. I cut them up to different sizes and keep them in the kitchen and in my car. They ae kind of sticky and I think you can get them and are sold as shelf liners, which are not sticky.
When I go to a gas station and buy anything in a bottle I have these things in my car. But I must tell you that I will pay for my bottled drink and ask the cashier to open it for me.

Any suggestions on where I can find one of those "rubber husbands"?

          KOKO,
THOSE ARE THE RUBBER THINGS (FLAT AND GRIPPY ON ONE SIDE) THAT COMPANYS GIVE OUT AS COMPLIMENTARY GIFTS (ADVERTISING). IF YOU CAN`T FIND ONE, USE A RUBBER DISH GLOVE.

Since those gripping sheets require a fairly strong grip they might not work. Do a Google search for "jar opener for the elderly" and you will find lots of information.

I just bought an Oxo Good Grips Jar Opener ( at the thrift store for 50 cents ) and it works great.

Thanks so much for sharing. Many time gadgets don't work as advertised, so I wanted personal experience from a user.

After reading your post, I googled Oxo Jar Openers - seems like they're easy to find. Also looks like some can fit all size lids/caps.

All kinds of bottles and jars!

koko...Yes there is a device called the Black and Decker Lids Off - Open-It-All (Jars, Bottles and Cans). In their own words: "It adjusts to fit almost any size or shape including jars with plastic lids, thin jars, baby food jars and large jars. Collapses for easy storage." And I think places like Walmart, Target etc carry it or even Bed, Bath & Beyond one time. So goood luck!!

KoKo - I also use those "waffle thingys"They work great for opening lids. I also use them for opening sliding doors. We have one that I sometimes slide too far and can't grab the little tab that sticks out. Not to worry, I keep one of those grippy things in the drawer close by.

I also use them for opening those darn pill bottles that you have to line up the arrows and push up. This does make it alot easier.

Have also used it "occasionally" to open those twist off caps on wine coolers!

                          Hi Koko,

Years before I was dx'd with MS, I was having problems with carpal tunnel. The State provided me with an opener that has a loop of wire that you can decrease in size to firmly grip the bottle cap. The length of the handle (cheater) gives me more oomph to twist it open. I also have a patch of sorts sent to me by Copaxone that gives me a better grip. One thing you can get in a short time is a pair of channel lock pliers in the tool section of Walmart or some such place. Some people call them water pump pliers. Hope this helps.

Black and Decker makes a jar opener

I found a jar opener made by Black and Decker last Christmas. It fits most size jars.

Thanks Bill, Kathy, Shumogy, and Genus for your suggestions too!

I think I'm the only person on the planet who doesn't know what a waffle thingy is

My sister brought an Oxo Good Grips over. It would work great if I had the strength in my right hand/arm to hold the jar or bottle steady. I use my strong hand/arm to turn the lid with the opener, but difficulty holding on to what I'm trying to open.

                              Still it's better than before....

                              Thanks all,
                              KoKo
