    Old-Fashioned Buttermilk Pound Cake

    Ingredients
    1/2 cup{1 stick} butter OR margarine, softened
    1/2 cup shortening
    2 cups sugar
    5 eggs
    2-1/2 teaspoons vanilla
    3 cups sifted all-purpose flour
    1/2 teaspoon salt
    1/2 teaspoon baking powder
    1/2 teaspoon baking soda
    1 cup buttermilk

    Directions
    1 Preheat oven to 325 degrees.
    2 Grease and butter a 10-inch tube pan.
    3 Cream together butter, shortening, and sugar in a large bowl until light and fluffy.
    4 Add eggs, 1 at a time, beating well after each addition.
    5 Blend in vanilla.
    6 Sift flour, salt, baking powder, and baking soda together; add to creamed mixture alternately with buttermilk, beginning and ending with flour.
    7 Mix well after each addition.
    8 Spoon batter into prepared pan.
    9 Bake 1 hour and 15 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted 1 inch from edge comes out clean.

    MAKES 12 to 15 servings
