    Dietary Supplements: Hope or Hype

A dated CNN report stated that $1 in $3 spent on vitamins on vitamin, mineral and herbal supplements is wasted. When I review this forum there seems to be a competing diets and limited consensus on what supplements may or may not work. I look at some of the LONG lists of items people are adding to their diet and I wonder if I am truly missing out or simply saving money.

So many threads have so much information it's hard to digest the information. I was hoping for a more succinct list in the following or similar format:

    Item/Dose:
    Reason taken:
    Benefits:
    Cost/Purchased From:

Here is what I currently take

    Item/Dose: Vitamin D-3/5000 iu
Reason taken: Vitamin D is low on blood tests
Benefits: I cannot attribute any positive changes other than higher Vitamin D levels on my blood tests.
    Cost/Purchased from: $18.99 for 400 tablets @ Sam's Club

    Item/Dose: sublingual B12 Complex/2500mcg
    Reason taken: Low energy levels
Benefits: When I do not take the B12, I tend to have less energy.
    Cost/Purchased from: $12.99 for 400 tablets @ Sam's Club

    Thank you!

I'm taking 5 supplements right now - one will be ditched come spring, one will be ditched when the bottle is done (I figure I should give it at least a bottle worth to see effect) - one I'd like to ditch but doc says no no, and 2 that I am definitely staying with.

    Item/Dose: Vitamin D 1000IU 1x day (1 month)
Reason taken:Its winter, less sun, have been doing this for years
    Benefits: none noticed
    Cost/Purchased From: 200 tabs $16.99 @ health store
    Will discontinue in spring.

    Item/Dose:ALA 100 mg 1x Day (1 month)
    Reason taken: General Health/Liver support
    Benefits: non noticed
    Cost/Purchased From: 90 tabs $14.99 @ local pharmacy
Not convinced of any benefits, will ditch when bottle is done.

Item/Dose: B12 sub lingual 1000mcg 1xdaily (3 months) (but not diligent with it)
Reason taken: attempt to correct 2 blood lab values that are unrelated to b12 deficiency.
Benefits: Improvement noted in blood lab values, but I find the b12 amps up some MSy Sx, and I don't feel good while taking it.
    Cost/Purchased From: 80 tabs $7.00 @ local pharmacy
Would rather not continue, but doc insist I do (sigh)

    Item/Dose: Magnesium Oxide 500mg (250 twice day)
    (3 months)
    Reason taken: General Health
Benefits: helped reduce insane volume of peripheral nerve twitches - woo hoo so happy!
    Cost/Purchased From: 100 tabs 15.99 @ local pharmacy
I will surely keep on this supplement, although may go down to 250mg/day

    Item/Dose: Royal Jelly/Ginseng 5ml vial 1x day (2 months)
    Reason taken: food supplement/general health
Benefits: increased mental alertness, better sleep, decreased cravings for sweets, positive effect on 2 blood labs.
Cost/Purchased From: 30 vials per box $10.00 @ local grocery (or Chinatown herbal store)
Will definitely stay on this. (I used this to get through University)

Both the Magnesium and Royal Jelly/Ginseng gave me the most obvious, immediate and positive effect.

My GP, neuro and physiatrist all stress that everyone should be taking vitamin D in Canada (even in summer because chances are we are still not getting enough) but especially those with MS since there is a link somewhere and ongoing research into the benefits.

If you are post-menopausal, beware of multivitamins with iron- not needed.

I think it's important to have iron levels checked before deciding if it is necessary or not.

The news recently is covering the amount of liver damage that is increasing and blaming it on supplements.

Pretty scary. My doctors all know what I'm taking so they are kept in the loop.

All of the Vit. D amounts on here look really low. I never take less than 15000 IU per day, per Tara.

Other ones that are my favorites are Coenzyme Q10, a good B complex, the right mix of Magnesium and Calcium, ACL/ALA, good probiotics, some Vit. C when needed, a good diet with lots of good fats.

I have found that as any problems come, I dose heavy on antioxidants to quench the free radicals. That for me is the best use of supplements. Being mindful of the right diet for me plays a more crucial role.
