Research shows children diagnosed with celiac disease before the age of 4 reduced their risk of developing additional auto-immune disorders.
Children diagnosed between the ages of 4 and 12 have a 17% risk; from 12 to 20 years of age the risk goes up 27% and an individual diagnosed with celiac disease above the age of 20 has a 34% chance of developing another autoimmune disorder.
Scandanavia Journal of Gastroenterol. 2005 Apr;40(4):437-43.
IMO this literature provides us with a connection between auto-immune disorders and gluten/celiac disease.
What this means here on MSWorld. Its postulated there maybe a familian link with MS.
I routinely recommend to MS patients to have their families (mainly children) follow a gluten free diet and have their vit D levels checked. The younger these can be corrected the better the outcome. And research shows following a gluten free diet from an earlier age reduces the risk of developing additional auto-immune disorders.
