    Frustrated

It’s been awhile since I have posted here. I have been doing well with no issues up until now. I seem to have gotten this mysterious illness and don’t seem to be getting better.

I have been sick for two weeks now. It started out with a sore throat....figured I was developing a cold. The sore throat got 10x worse and got to the point where I could not swallow anything. Felt like I was swallowing razor blades. Got really dehydrated and also started running a low grade fever that got as high as 104 for several days despite taking Tylenol around the clock.

Had a virtual visit with a doctor who diagnosed me with strep throat and put me on penicillin. After taking the penicillin for several days, I wasn’t getting any better. Had a virtual visit with another doctor who advised me to go to an urgent care office so I could be seen in person and be diagnosed properly. I went and was tested for strep, mono and COVID....all came back negative. Got a steroid and a very strong antibiotic injection. Was also put on prednisone for several days and a different antibiotic.

After a few days I was getting no better. Was referred to an ENT who gave me another steroid and antibiotic injection and put me on a third antibiotic. I am still no better and now the lymph nodes in my neck are very sore and swollen. I am nauseous all the time and have no appetite. I’ve lost about 15 pounds these past couple weeks because I can’t eat. Having severe insomnia too. However, I think the nausea and insomnia are from the antibiotic I’m currently on.

I go back to the ENT this week to see if the antibiotic is working which I don’t think it is. If it doesn’t work the doctor wants to remove my tonsils. I am just so frustrated. I have had strep, tonsillitis and other throat infections before, but nothing this bad that has lasted for this long. Doesn’t seem to be responding to any of the antibiotics either. I’ve had to apply for fmla because I can’t work feeling this miserable.

At this point I don’t care what has to happen....I just want to feel better and back to normal. I just hope that if I do end up having to have my tonsils removed that it will solve my issues, but I’m not so sure.

Not sure if this even has anything to do with MS. Guess I’m just venting. I haven’t been sick in so long and then this comes on all of a sudden. My doctor is just baffled as to why whatever infection I have is not responding to antibiotics. About to go into week three feeling like this.... not sure how much more of this I can take.

I am so sorry to hear about your illness. It sounds absolutely miserable and I understand your frustration. I really hope that you feel better soon. Thank you for posting. It is good sometimes to be able to vent.

That sounds awful ladybug! We can sometimes become resistant to antibiotics due to prior use, but it doesn't sound like you would have been on them since you have been healthy. If they put you on a stronger antibiotic, they can make you nauseous and steroids can cause insomnia. I do hope you find relief sometime soon!

I truly hope that the cause and solution to your infection is discovered soon. I can relate; it is so disheartening when wellness issues occur, especially if they remain mysteries for so long.

About whether or not it is MS related -- My theory is usually, it might be. But, it might not be; I can't assume that. In other words, I never know. I do tend to think that, since MS is neurological and affects the brain, that since the brain controls everything, anything **could be** MS related.

I'm so sorry you have been so sick. Are you still experiencing fevers or showing signs of an active infection, such an elevated white blood cell count? Are you immune suppressed from an MS therapy drug such as Ocrevus or Rituximab?

I think I would ask to be seen by an infectious disease specialist before having your tonsils out. Maybe waiting things out to be sure that this isn't just a nasty virus. The tincture of time is often the best medicine. I had one terrible virus in March that lasted 7 weeks and wasn't Covid. I had a horrible sore throat, ear infection, fevers, perforated ear drum, infection in my mastoid and jaw bone, etc. I felt like poop for the entire time and had to take an extended leave from work. My doctors never did identify the virus. I hope things start to improve but in the meantime, rest and take care of yourself as best as you can.
