    Vacation Ideas??

I’m looking for vacation ideas that can be shared, enjoyable experience for both my husband and me. I’m the one with MS and am now on Social Security disability, use a mobility scooter and am extremely heat intolerant. My husband will retire in September after 40 years as a fire fighter, so we would like to plan some activities. Anyone have suggestions about a trip/activity we could both participate in/enjoy?

Please thank your husband for his service (and yours).

I too and heat intolerant, but my next trip will be to Vegas before it heats up. There's a mess load of handicapped accessible things to do there.

Here's a website with some ideas for you: https://wheelchairtravel.org/united-states-canada/

I have a slight disagreement on Washington DC. While many of the landmarks are accessible, it can be a chore getting around as many of the sidewalks are not accessible (curb drop offs).

Again, thank you both for your service and I hope you have an amazing adventure.
    I wish you well...

How about a cruise to Alaska? Or a coastal cruise in the north?

On the other hand, if you both are nature lovers here's some ideas https://www.transfermaster.com/blog/...it-this-Summer

If you decide that visiting a National Park is for you, be sure to get a free ($10 processing fee) lifetime pass to visit the parks https://store.usgs.gov/access-pass

My husband and I went to Yellowstone in early June before school got out and had a blast. Many accessible trails to enjoy.

What about Branson, MO? You could rent a vacation condo and choose some shows to attend. It's kind of like the Vegas shows without the gambling and very family-friendly.

I've been fortunate to have been able to travel domestically extensively since my diagnosis in 2011. We've visited Yellowstone 3 times. The last time I used a wheelchair most of the time since my husband is comfortable pushing it. Many accessible trails and information centers/museums to visit. You probably will not be able to get a handicapped accessible room in the park this late in the season. However they have several hotels that have elevators to the higher floors with regular rooms.

In August 2018 we did a Canada/New England cruise with Royal Caribbean. We were able to visit all the ports and found several shore trips that could accommodate my wheelchair. Usually stuck it in the hold under the coach. And of course, being on a ship is so easy since the venues and the staff work well with guests with handicaps. This fall we are taking a reposition cruise that departs Vancouver and ends, for us in Honolulu Hawaii with a few stops around the islands. The ship continues on to Australia.

If you have any questions, please ask away.

Thanks for your suggestions! We've considered a cruise, but assumed I'd be stuck on the ship while my husband had to do shore excursions solo. I'll do more research about disability accommodations on cruises.

Casinos are out. I go to Vegas with a friend because my husband HATES the smokey and noisy casinos. We've tried local casinos, but he's ready to leave in an hour where I could stay all day!

Also considering Disney World with son, daughter-in-law and grandchildren in January, but I'm not sure how I would hold up fatigue-wise. I couldn't do the all day, marathon park sessions like I did pre-MS.

A cruise might be the best option because I could return to the room to rest when necessary. Thanks again for your ideas!

A cruise is a great idea. A wheelchair accessible stateroom is bigger and gives you room for your scooter. There’s a form describing your mobility limitations that you can fill out ahead of time so the cruise line knows you’ll need transportation, etc for your scooter.

We rented a manual wheelchair in addition to having my scooter. It appeared in our room after we boarded and was picked up after we left for less than $100. Some shore excursions where the ship was tendered weren’t possible with a scooter.

Ports in the US, Canada, and the Scandinavian countries were generally accessible. Mexico not so much, Russia definitely was a problem. There were lots of stairs and high curbs.

The cruise line can tell you which excursions are scooter friendly and are helpful in planning.

Those sound like nice places to go. But being heat intolerant also, I would go in the middle of summer, like last week in July and go to somewhere in the Southern Hemisphere.

There are lots of choices: Australia, New Zealand, Argentina, French Polynesian Islands.
The French Polynesian Island are way out in the middle of the Pacific Ocean and are supposed to be a paradise. My sweet father wanted to take me and my sister there as a special memory for us. We got all our travel plans made, packed up and went to the airport. The airport was crowded and stressful which was hard on my dad.

We were carrying the luggage on a conveyer belt and when we got to the end my father tripped and fell. I keep going over and over in my mind to search for ways I could have grabbed him and prevented a fall. But he fell and broke his hip. Instead of getting on a plane we all piled into an ambulance. Since he’s been gone since 2004 it just feels like going there would complete something for him.

Sorry I got off on a little tangent. This might not be your kind of ideal vacation or within your budget. If you want to stay in the US you could go to Glacier at the northernmost part of western Montana. Or take the train through Banff, Canada (both things I haven’t done)

If you like Europe and plan to travel around May I recommend Barcelona hands down. Porto Rico is beautiful. When it was in the midst of stormy weather it was enchanting. But once the sun came out it was unbearable. The hotel I stayed at the had the coldest and more powerful air conditioning I had ever seen. I just stayed in during the day and walked on the beach and swam in those beautiful warm, clear Carabean waters, showered and dined at the hotel. It’s still damaged from Maria so probably wouldn’t be ideal.

Thank you for the question. It was fun thinking about all the amazing places I have never seen. Maybe it is time to plan a trip to French Polynesia.

I've heard some good feedback about the Limitless Travel tours, maybe it would be easier to book a package tour rather than planning everything by yourself.
If you just want to read about different places around the world that are worth visiting in September, check rove.me, these guys give some nice tips.
Also, the idea to book a cruise trip seems to be reasonable to me.
