    Salt and MS

I recently went to an MS dinner and the neurologist that was speaking said it has now been found out Salt is bad for MS. But that's all he said. He didn't give any details. Does anyone here know of the new findings on that. A doctor along time ago told me I needed to eat/take more salt but I forgot what my problem was then that made him say that. Any information you all have would be very helpful!

Hi emily~ Here is an article from Medscape that talks about the research http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/780480

Note however - "that the research is preliminary and "by no means proof" that salt is involved in MS. Numerous other environmental and genetic factors probably play a role"

Since I've had MS, my sodium (and chloride) levels are always low. When I have an exacerbation, they dip extremely low. My MS affects a lot of my autonomic issues (BP, heart rate, etc.) and I have no idea if the low sodium levels are part of that process...but I've been urged to keep my salt intake up, so I do.

Salt is a vital mineral to our diets, but in excess can cause problems. The American Heart Association suggests that 90% of Americans are consuming too much salt. The average American consumes more than TWICE the recommended daily allowance. High blood pressure is the leading risk factor for death in women in the United States more than times greater than breast cancer. Excess levels of sodium/salt may put you at risk for:
        • High Blood Pressure
        • Stroke
        • Heart Failure
        • Osteoperosis
        • Stomach Cancer
        • Kidney Disease
        • Kidney Stones
        • Enlarged Heart Muscle
        • Headaches

What role does salt have on multiple sclerosis? Not sure, but read below.

Sodium accumulation is associated with disability and a progressive course in multiple sclerosis.

        http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23801742

Sodium concentration is increased within lesions, normal appearing white matter and cortical and deep grey matter in multiple sclerosis, with higher concentrations seen in secondary-progressive multiple sclerosis and in patients with greater disability. Increased total sodium concentration is likely to reflect neuroaxonal pathophysiology leading to clinical progression and increased disability.

Does salt intake play a role in MS?

But the big question today is: do these studies actually tell us whether salt intake in people plays a role in MS? Not really.

        Sodium May Make MS Worse

COPENHAGEN, Denmark — A study for the first time links higher sodium intake with increased clinical and radiologic disease activity in people with multiple sclerosis (MS). A high-sodium diet has recently been shown to worsen disease in the animal model of MS, experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis.
