MS and High Blood Pressure Connection????

Hi there. I have been diagnosed with probable MS, waiting for results from my LP MS panel, and a consult with an MS specialist tomorrow, but fairly certain that it is what it is (symptoms indicate, lesion, and most mimics ruled out). The only issue that does not add up is hypertension. And out of control at that! Has anyone heard of any relation between MS and BP??? Last Monday when I went emergently to the ER (facial numbness, knife-splitting headache), my BP was off the charts--way more life-threatening than potential MS. This problem is a real surprise as I am young, an athlete/dancer and fitness professional (Pilates studio owner for 11 years). At this point I have begun a BP work-up (hormone tests, EKG, Echo scheduled Monday) and am taking meds to stabilize, so I am safe, but still truly curious. Any thoughts, greatly appreciated. And FYI, prior to ER, no stress/anxiety. Thanks 5 million!!!! KT

    Hi KT,
Sorry you are have these symptoms. You may want to look up autonomic dysfunction. We've discussed it several times on this forum and several of us have it. I personally have blood pressure problems resulting in random high and low BP. I'm also somewhat athletic. This all started at a fairly young age and I have absolutely no other reason for the BP problems.

Your tests my provide another answer but I thought you could read up on this while you wait. Hope you are feeling better. Blood pressure fluctuations can be exhausting.

Yes, depending on where your lesions are located, MS can cause BP issues....some folks have spikes, some folks suffer from very low BP.

Here's a pretty recent thread discussing BP issues and MS. Also if you use the search button in the blue bar, and use advanced search, you can find other threads dealing with blood pressure.

      Hope this helps:

I hope that you can get some definite answers soon!

My blood pressure can be normal or fatally high or low. So far, one year of 'trying' different meds...no help.

Used some Jack Herer medicinal marijuana and it makes it normal, again. Just tried it yesterday...100/66 and held for many hours, then I fell asleep. fed

            Thank you

Hi there, thanks for your posts. Today may be the official D (Dx) Day as I have an appt with an MS specialist at USC. I do not think my high BP is a coincidence with the probable MS. And last night I googled hypertension and MS and there are a multitude of medical/scientific journal articles on the subject. Not sure how my two neuros in the hospital and out missed these stories. Hello????? Anyway, I am going to get to the bottom of this b/c I will probably croak from high BP first--even before MS, old age, whatever!!! Haha!! Little cranky today as I woke up at 5am-- LP headache and steroid high. Woohoo!!! Be well, friends. xxkt

              BP

Increased blood pressure and often even pulse will usually accompany pain, especially more severe pain. These two things will often increase with severe anxiety. Hope you get an answer soon.

Steroids can increase your blood pressure, too; kind of scary those docs didn't catch that..either!

Many M.S.r's have had strokes. fed

Thanks again for your notes. BP has stabilized. I know the pain, stress, steroids hiked it up, but still no explanation why a week ago Monday when I had crazy symptoms it spiked. Just happy I went to the ER and did not have TIA or stroke. I have visited an endocrinologist and will get results some time today and next week a cardiologist. Everyone wants to see if the BP is a secondary health issue. And as I write I am just cracking up--I NEVER get sick--and here I am in the hospital last week, visiting docs!!! Holy Cr!!!! And haha-I have to watch my potty mouth here!!!!

                  Off topic ????
If you have experienced facial, head, arm, hand, leg numbness and pain, have you regained any sensation and less pain sensitivity? How long? My symptoms arrived around 8/1/13 and never abated (with the exception of the pain coming and going). I finished the 5 day steroidal IV treatment Sunday, FYI.

Thank you!!!!!! Have a great day. It is gorgeous here in LA. Wish I could post a picture. KT

My blood pressure averages 120/80 but fluctuates between 100/70 and 130/100.

I cheat. I take lisinopril, amlodipine, and atenelol to control high blood pressure. My blood pressure was 160/110 prior to 2004. Then the need for open heart surgery (ascending aortic dissection - tore at the heart). I've also had the "Y" bypassed. All due to high blood pressure.

                    I don't if they're related, but I've had MS since early 1988.

I've got low BP so not related in my case.
