    distaste for MS :(

Hey um ive had MS for a year and ive had the worst experience with it. Im 19 btw. I noticed that ive lost my taste buds where i can taste sweet salty or bitter foods. Even cold water tastes disgusting. Im not sure what do but im kind of freaking out here. Has anyone experienced this or know what i should do?

If you are trouble with your senses, that is no surprise. MS dishes out some weird symptoms that could be something or not be something.
You should learn to treat your MS with diet and the proper medication, if it is FDA approved for your form of MS.
Do you know your vitamin D, B-12 and magnesium levels.
If not, get them done and stay aware of them. you also should AVOID dairy, wheat products and limit all red meat to no more than 20% of total calories. If you have a weight problem, you need to get it under control. That's a long list! Good luck

is this a new symptom? Have you let your doctor know? Always tell your doctor of anything new. And remember, not everything is MS related.

I want to second what Jerry said about your vitamin levels. Have them check them out, and have them do it on a regular basis.

        Hi BriSheri,

Long before I was diagnosed with MS, I had a similar thing. Everything in the world smelt and tasted exactly the same and disgusting. I could not tell the difference between perfume and onions. This lasted 3 years with all sorts of medical experts puzzled. MS was not suspected at the time. Neurologists were publishing reports on my freakish taste and smell.

Eventually the sense of smell and taste slowly came back. Doctors only say that they still have no explanation, although they guess MS may have somehow caused this bizarre problem.

Tell your MS specialist and please keep us informed as to how you are.

        Good luck!

I had a similar thing happen about a year after I was diagnosed. It was really strange because food tasted normal if I chewed it on the right side of my mouth, but it tasted really gross on the left side of my mouth. My neurologist's office did nothing, I'm not sure I even saw him. So, I went to the dentist to have my mouth checked. I figured it had something to do with my cranial nerves but figured a trip to the dentist wouldn't hurt and of course everything was fine.

You can let your neurologist know and may you'll get some oral steroids to help it go away faster, but this isn't necessary. What I did was eat salty food and no sweets because these were disgusting. After a few months it went away and things tasted normal again. Eating was no fun, but I just tried to be thankful that everything else was normal.

I lost my sense of taste. As you stated I can taste bitter, salty. I have learned to enjoy food a different way. I try to enjoy texture. It SUX, but it is something that happened, and I cannot change it.

I am so sorry you are going through this problem. I started having numbness in my face and tongue in July 2011. My MS Specialist said it was a relapse. She told me to ride it out if I could or I could get IV steroids. I decided to ride it out. I still cant taste very much. Some days are better than others. Contact you neuro.

              And take good care!
