    Jaw fatigue anybody?

Just curious if anybody else's jaw gets fatigued from eating.

For me it's just chewy stuff (meat or roughage) or crunchy things requiring strength (hard pretzels and the like). Sometimes I have to take a break from chewing, rarely I can't finish.

    It's not awful, just annoying.

Anybody else know what I am on about? (or is it just me?)
    Best,
    Lynne

    Hi Lynne,

I know exactly what you're talking about but in my case it's from TMJ disorder and pretty much happens, as you describe, with steak or tougher meat. Steak was never a big thing with me so I rarely have it because of this.

    Are you a jaw clencher?

I know exactly what you mean. I do not have tmj.
I get tired and sore from chewing anything. Any kind of meat, noodles, mm candy, it gets annoying because I just want to finish a meal without taking all these breaks to give my jaw a rest. Tonight I actually noticed when I went to put the fork in my mouth, my jaw was stiff like my legs get when I get up in the morning.

Count me in also. I know exactly what you mean. I can't count how many meals I've just given up on halfway through because I just don't want to chew anymore.

Along with this symptom, the feeling in my face has gone weird, my swallowing is bad, I have tremors in my lips and tongue.

Luckily, ice cream does not need to be chewed, and most chocolate can simply melt in your mouth!

Thanks for all the responses, glad to know it's not just me.

I may have TMJ, but mainly I have phases of spasticity in the neck and jaw. This means for me that I do clench and my neck and jaw is stiff as heck and there is not much I can do about it.
I have a mouth guard and I have gotten physical therapy which did help. Right now I am not having so much spasticity but just weakness. Not loads, just enough to make my head feel heavy and my jaw tired.
I was worried at first because that was one of the first questions a neuro asked me the first time I saw one ("do you have fatigue in your neck or find it hard to chew food") At the time I said I didnt as at the time it was the case. But now I find it happening more often.

I am just glad it's not just me (but sorry it's a wee pain in the butt for us all.)

            Best,
            Lynne

yes! I am a teacher and have trouble talking the later it gets in the day sometime too. And because I need to talk and some meds. dry out my mouth, I try to chew gum.

I have to kind of suck on the gum to conserve my mouth muscles.

Most of the time, it is okay. But sometimes the later in the day or evening or with tougher foods, at times, can be tiring.

Oh well, maybe it will help with losing weight1
