When I was diagnosed with MS, the MRI showed multiple lesions on my brain. I received news today that my EEG came back abnormal. I now have to do an ambulatory EEG for 24 hours. I expected an abnormal EEG since the lesions were on my brain, but my neuro thinks it could be seizures or something else causing my abnormal EEG and that is why I have to do another ambulatory EEG. Couldn't it just be the MS?

Hello WIborn,
The most common reason for an EEG is to look for seizure activity, although it is used for other reasons. Simply having brain lesions does not mean an EEG will be abnormal.
I had an EEG done about 6 years ago and the EEG results were normal. My neuro was looking for evidence of seizures.

I was dx with epilepsy based on abnormal EEG results about 15yrs before my MS dx. One of the theories of my MS is that seizures were presenting sx's of MS. Medical literature I have read states approx. 2% of MS presents w/seizures. I do not know if tis theory has been replaced with anything more current, could be dated but still relevent.
Epilepsy occures in the general population and can simulatinously? exist with MS, as do many other disorders.
