      Thoughts on Mobility Scooter

      Hello!
As Mermaid stated, insurance will not pay for a power mobility device that is used outside of the home. Basically, insurance doesn't care if a person ever leaves the home. When an assessment is done for a power mobility device, the assessing team has to state that the device will necessary for mobility inside of the home and is necessary for health and quality of life within the home.

Insurance companies will only pay for items procured from an approved provider. Unfortunately for consumers, that really limits one's options.

As far as getting around outside of the home, it's important to consider that being able to do what you enjoy is very important to your quality of life. You might feel that it's dishonest to go through the steps necessary to get a scooter when you don't feel the need to use in indoors, but if everyone who got a power wheelchair, for example, did that then none of my coworkers who use those would be working.

You can contact your insurance company to see who their approved provider for scooters is and see what that provider has available. If you have a good team to work with you for the prescription, assessment, etc. then you should be able to get one. They can even stipulate that it has to be able to be taken apart for transport to your doctor appointments--a medical necessity.

If you are not sure where you can go for a good assessment, your state's Assistive Technology Act program should be able to help. Here is where you can find the contact information for your state:
http://www.atconnects.com/at-act-pro...t-act-programs You can also go to www.resna.org and find an ATP (Assistive Technology Professional) who can do an assessment.

      Good luck!
      Christina
