    MAC or Mycobacterium avium complex

I was at a seminar yesterday where one of the speakers discussed MAC. It is a opportunistic infection, mostly affected the very old or someone with a compromised immune system. It is well known in those who treat AIDS. Onset is usually insidious, with productive cough, and be associated with disseminated disease. Sometimes it is mistaken for TB as sputum cultures are what is needed to make the diagnosis of lung infection and can take 4 weeks to differentiate it from TB. Blood cultures and stool cultures for disseminated disease.

It can be treated but is expensive, using a two or three drug regimen for a year or more. Like a lot of opportunistic infections, the bug is quite common in our environment.

I did a search here and didn't find anything.

Sounds like one of those hard to diagnose diseases early on that might be a problem for MS patients on meds for MS. It is treatable but could be hard to catch. Anyway, something to be aware of.
