We Carry Each Other
12/23/2009 - 8:29pm

MSWorld members have learned first hand about online support through our Message Boards and Chat Rooms. Many of our members have also discovered CarePages where each of us can set up a site where our friends and family can communicate with us by way of message boards.

The 11 Keys to Mastering Disability and Life
12/23/2009 - 8:21pm

Any person with any disability, or family and friends, can relate to Mark Smith's message. Although Mark was born with Cerebral Palsy (not MS) he writes, "You didn't choose your disabilty, but you can choose how you live with it."

The book itself is small in size but packed with encouragement to rise above our physical limitations and continue to dream and thrive.

Day by Day, The Chronicles of a Hard of Hearing Reporter
12/23/2009 - 2:36pm

I’ve had the pleasure of knowing Liz for a number of years. Day by Day gives those of us fortunate enough to have good hearing a true insight into what it’s like to lose something we take for granted every day.

Her explanations of what she and others with similar problems have gone through were covered in just enough detail to understand without being overwhelmed.  The use of her past columns in the newspaper worked very nicely to tell her story.

Liz is a very inquisitive person (perfect for a reporter) who has a pas

The Anti-Inflammation Diet and Recipe Book

The author received her medical degree from the National College of Naturopathic Medicine, in Portland, Oregon.

This cookbook is geared to anyone wanting to eliminate potential food allergies which may cause inflammation, which then might slow healing and potentially lead to chronic diseases, such as: "Protect yourself and your family from heart disease, arthritis, diabetes, allergies - and more."

The book includes: 125 recipes, examples of foods to eat and avoid, weeks of sample menus for summer and winter

You Are Not Your Illness: Seven Principles for Meeting the Challenge
12/23/2009 - 2:14pm

This is an interesting look at how to find meaning in life through challenges that come with chronic illness. Linda Noble Topf has Multiple Sclerosis and it is her ability to live beyond her illness that helped her put together this book. This is a book about self exploration, coping with change and getting the most out of life. She offers a paradigm for shifting perception of illness from behaving as a victim to exploring the journey of life.

Multiple Sclerosis, Self-Help·A Patient's View by Ed Lash
12/23/2009 - 1:56pm

Mr. Lash was diagnosed with MS at the age of 42 in 1969 though, as with many people with MS, he had symptoms long before that. Now in his seventies Mr. Lash (sometimes called "the Mr. Rogers of MS") is a very active volunteer in his local chapter of the NMSS. His book is both an autobiography of his illness and, more significantly, a compendium of his knowledge and experience in coping with MS. As stated in the book's introduction, Mr. Lash does not write much about drugs or medication. He leaves that to medical professionals.

The Art of Getting Well; A Five-Step Plan for Maximizing Health When You Have a Chronic Illness
12/23/2009 - 1:35pm

This is a remarkable book. The overall message is that we with chronic illness do well to observe and improve the quality of our lives. Mr. Spero then offers eminently practicable suggestions covering all (as far as this reviewer is concerned) areas of those lives. Part of what makes this book so useful is that Mr. Spero is both a man with MS and a medical professional, so there's no denying his knowledge and experience on both sides of that equation.

Yeah, yeah, okay, another self-help book and you think you've heard it all before, right?

The Core Program

Exercise. We know it is important but where do we begin?

My recommendation for women is "The Core Program" by Peggy Brill.

My neurologist told me years ago to keep moving. Moving can be a problem with MS but if you want to strengthen your core, arms and legs, Brill shows with clear photographs and written descriptions how to do just that.

The program is divided into three levels: The Core Foundation, The Intermediate Core, and the Ultimate Core. I have not been disappointed following Brill's recommendations. All movements are floor exercises.

Oxyflex™

What strikes me first about Oxyflex™is the simplicity of the exercises and the clear explanation of the plan for improved health. Debra Ross has MS most of her life and is a personal trainer in Colorado.

This book discusses clearly the need for deep breathing, water and a healthy style of eating. She lists nutrients important for good health along with symptoms if you do not have enough in your diet. Then she includes an inclusive list of foods which provide the specific nutrient.

Yoga and Multiple Sclerosis: A Journey to Health and Healing

What makes this book different from other yoga books?

This book not only offers the expertise of long-time yoga student and back expert Dr. Fishman, but along with Eric Small, world renown yoga teacher, the two offer a book which encompasses every aspect of using yoga with MS, no matter where your disease has taken you.
