For years I have done my own version of yoga and stretching exercises I learned from a book. Even if you don't want to adopt the Eastern philosophy of yoga, Liz Franklin's soothing voice will ease you into the proper movements to feel better.
There are three tapes in the series:
The Journey Begins
I recommend this first video for anyone who has not used yoga in their exercise routines before or for a long time. Here Liz will instruct you on proper posture, breathing and movements. Please follow her instruction without pushing beyond your limits. (I tilted my head too far and had a sore neck for a few days. I was not as limber as I thought!)
New Possibilities is the second video
and the third video is advanced and I recommend you move slowly toward this video
Growing Younger
The seniors used in videos show how differently we all must modify our positioning for our physical limits. So don't be discouraged if you are not near "senior" age - remember we learn well from those with years of experience. I am encouraged these men and women are staying active - a very good example.
The following is an excerpt from her Web site:
"Liz Franklin's Yoga in Chairs™ is designed to allow almost anyone to participate in a very gentle form of Yoga. It works the joints and muscles to increase flexibility, strength, balance, and circulation. It goes beyond typical exercises in that it encourages quiet reflection, proper breathing, and better posture.
"The benefits of this program are remarkable. Students report reduced blood pressure, faster recovery from injury or surgery, better sleep, increased mobility, improved posture and some students have even gained height."
On the latter, I have always said I am like the cartoon character Garfield who says he is "not overweight, he is undertall!" So I am hopeful.
I have not viewed any other yoga videos so cannot do a comparison. I do know that Liz's voice is clear and soothing, the exercises are shown in a clear and easy to understand manner, and no one has to get down on the floor unless you choose to during small segments of the video.
So for a healthful, unthreatening yet challenging workout, I recommend Liz Franklin's videos. Check out her Web site to learn more. http://www.yogainchairs.com/default.asp
