"On Becoming Blind"

by Christine, aka cucumber

Many the things I dimly see

Since blindness has befallen me,

Voices must now take the place

Of many a dear familiar face.

My ears are now my treasured friends,

As is my sense of touch

Memories conjure up the scenes

Which mean to me so much

Music brightens up my days

With melodies calm and stirring,

Which help me fill those lonely hours

And stop my heart from yearning.

The sound off birdsong greets the dawn

And silence falls at eventide

All enrich the passing day

And stays the mind from thoughts forlorn.

The written word has taken flight –

No more for me to read or write;

But thoughts may still the mind employ

And hearing give me endless joy.

Though flowers I may not clearly see

Their beauty still is fair.

Their fragrance lures the hovering fee

Who tells me they are there.

But God has kindly given me

A sense of humour, serenity,

A quiet mind, the strength to cope

And face each new-born day with hope.
