Welcome Sarah

Sarah Peterson (Nov 1, 2007 7:18:03 PM)
Should I start? I'm new to this technology.

STOICOP (Nov 1, 2007 7:18:04 PM)
WELCOME SARAH

KenOP (Nov 1, 2007 7:18:05 PM)
Sarah when you are ready, please proceed

Sarah Peterson (Nov 1, 2007 7:18:22 PM)
Thanks for joining tonight’s discussion on the MS Technology Collaboratives & staying Connected Survey. I'm excited to share these results with you, because they're the product of a very unique collaboration and research process.

Sarah Peterson (Nov 1, 2007 7:18:38 PM)
The MS Technology Collaborative is an alliance of Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals, Microsoft, and the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. They've come together to better understand how people with MS use technology, and to connect them to information and resources to help move their lives forward and manage their MS.

Sarah Peterson (Nov 1, 2007 7:18:58 PM)
One of the key initiatives of the Collaboratives first year was to conduct a large scale survey looking at the role of technology in the lives people with MS. We worked with a steering committee of 9 people with MS to make sure that we covered relevant issues and asked the questions in a way that made sense. We wound up surveying 2,390 Americans with MS; drawn from the National MS Society database. We allowed people to take the 30 minute survey either by telephone or online, so that we wouldn't build in a bias to the survey collection results. As far as we know, this is the most comprehensive survey conducted on this topic.

Sarah Peterson (Nov 1, 2007 7:19:28 PM)
Before I go into the findings, I'm curious whether anyone here participated in the survey?

RagdollOP (Nov 1, 2007 7:19:35 PM)

YES ON LINE

Sarah Peterson (Nov 1, 2007 7:20:05 PM)
Wow! That's a better response rate than research ever gets. Glad to know we were reaching our target audience.

Kat (Nov 1, 2007 7:20:16 PM)
:)

Sarah Peterson (Nov 1, 2007 7:20:24 PM)
We found some interesting things. The summary of results is on the MyMSMyWay.com website, so I’m just going through a few key points:

Sarah Peterson (Nov 1, 2007 7:20:54 PM)
First of all, most of the MS population is highly reliant on technology.

*In fact, they use the Internet, computers, cell phones and other standard tools at higher rates than the general US population. Only 7% say that they do not use computers or the Internet.
*Nearly half of people agreed that ;technology plays a vital role in helping me live with MS; People with more severe MS challenges agree more strongly with this idea

Sarah Peterson (Nov 1, 2007 7:21:42 PM)
At the same time, people are facing challenges using the basic tools of technology and carrying out certain tasks. And most haven't found ways to adapt to them yet. For example:
* One-third of people say that their MS makes it harder to learn to use new technology
* 33% said they have trouble typing on a standard computer keyboard, but only 5% said they've made related adaptations, such as using an alternative keyboard or a voice recognition program.
* 30% said they have trouble reading text on a standard screen, but only 6% have made adjustments to the computer settings such as increasing font size or using screen magnifiers.

Sarah Peterson (Nov 1, 2007 7:22:33 PM)
The study suggests there is a big opportunity to educate people about the accessible technology tools which could help make their lives easier

* Only a quarter said that they have made changes to their computer in response to an MS Challenge.
* 56% of people said that better information about the tools and resources would be the key to making it easier to adapt their technology.
* 48% cited affordability as a barrier, even though many adaptive technologies are actually standard features of the average computers.

Sarah Peterson (Nov 1, 2007 7:23:27 PM)
So it’s a story of challenges and opportunity. It does lead us to believe that there is a big role for the MS Collaborative to help people learn more about the tools, resources and adaptations which will help technology play an even more important role in their lives.

Sarah Peterson (Nov 1, 2007 7:24:31 PM)
That's an overview of the key story. I'm happy to answer any questions that those topline results raise.

KenOP (Nov 1, 2007 7:24:44 PM)
Thank you Sarah

KenOP (Nov 1, 2007 7:24:53 PM)
We will be using protocol tonight to bring some order to chat. People entering or leaving chat will not be acknowledged. Please enter a ? or ! to ask a question or make a comment. KenOP (Nov 1, 2007 7:25:20 PM)
Anyone have a question?

Kat (Nov 1, 2007 7:25:21 PM)
?

LizOP (Nov 1, 2007 7:25:31 PM)
Kat, please ask your question

Kat (Nov 1, 2007 7:25:43 PM)
I would use voice recognition software however...

Kat (Nov 1, 2007 7:26:12 PM)
the time &; energy to train the software keeps me from adding it to my computer

Chatter 7 (Nov 1, 2007 7:26:36 PM)
?

Kat (Nov 1, 2007 7:26:46 PM)
is there really intuitive software out there for MACS?

Sarah Peterson (Nov 1, 2007 7:27:16 PM)
Since I'm not particularly an expert on the actual software and tools available perhaps others can weigh in?

Kat (Nov 1, 2007 7:27:58 PM)
maybe we need some tech help! ;)

LizOP (Nov 1, 2007 7:27:59 PM)
I have the Dragon Naturally Speaking, Kat, and it didn't take much time to train. But I do not have a MAC

KenOP (Nov 1, 2007 7:28:11 PM)
Sarah might not know about the latest computer technology. She is a survey expert but our 4th speaker in the series might have ideas.

Kat (Nov 1, 2007 7:28:26 PM)
great I’ll be sure to ask.

LizOP (Nov 1, 2007 7:28:30 PM)
Chatter 7, you can ask your question

Chatter 7 (Nov 1, 2007 7:28:32 PM)
Sarah - I attended your talk in Dallas and wanted your thoughts on a "Geek Squad" approach to helping people implement technology aids. Thanks - Dave A.

LizOP (Nov 1, 2007 7:28:56 PM)
?

Sarah Peterson (Nov 1, 2007 7:28:57 PM)
I believe that on the MyMSMyWay.com site there is a place where you can e-mail Ellen Kampel and ask some of the questions about technology adaptations...

Sarah Peterson (Nov 1, 2007 7:29:09 PM)
Great question about the "Geek Squad"

Kat (Nov 1, 2007 7:29:12 PM)
TY Sarah, I’ll look

Sarah Peterson (Nov 1, 2007 7:29:39 PM)
Yes, someone suggested organizing a team of people with MS who could address the challenges of those who are less tech savvy...

Chatter 7 (Nov 1, 2007 7:29:45 PM)
Could that work? It seems like people might be just in need of some short-term tech help

Chatter 6 (Nov 1, 2007 7:29:57 PM)

What prompted this survey to begin? How did the idea come about?

LizOP (Nov 1, 2007 7:32:11 PM)
Did your question get answered Chatter 7?

Chatter 7 (Nov 1, 2007 7:32:18 PM)
Yes, thank you

LizOP (Nov 1, 2007 7:32:30 PM)
My ? is next Sarah

LizOP (Nov 1, 2007 7:32:33 PM)
What prompted this survey to begin? How did the idea come about?

RagdollOP (Nov 1, 2007 7:32:36 PM)
?

Sarah Peterson (Nov 1, 2007 7:32:47 PM)
The survey got started by the MS Collaborative... (still typing)

Sarah Peterson (Nov 1, 2007 7:33:41 PM)
Since it was three very different organizations coming together they felt that it was important to come up with a shared understanding of this topic that they were looking at from three different perspectives: connections, treatment and accessible technology...

Sarah Peterson (Nov 1, 2007 7:34:22 PM)
It was intended to get people interested in the program, but also to make sure that their future programs were responding to an actual understanding of people living with MS.

LizOP (Nov 1, 2007 7:34:29 PM)
Thank you. Chatter 6, you may share your comment now

Chatter 8 (Nov 1, 2007 7:34:56 PM)
?

Sarah Peterson (Nov 1, 2007 7:34:56 PM)
For example, if we had found that there was a very low use of technology, and many people without computers, that would have given the MS Collaborative a very different focus.

Chatter 6 (Nov 1, 2007 7:35:28 PM)
When I think of a Geek Squad, I remember how helpful it was when Shared Solutions came to my house and taught me the autoinject. Sort of a shot squad approach. It really helped.

LizOP (Nov 1, 2007 7:36:00 PM)
Chatter 9, you may ask your question now.

Chatter 9 (Nov 1, 2007 7:37:02 PM)
Thanks. It was actually a comment. We are working on a pilot "geek squad" program in collaboration with Microsoft Accessibility Resource Centers in some markets and are just now implementing so will see what learning come from the pilot program over the next few months.

Chatter 1 (Nov 1, 2007 7:37:16 PM)
!

Kat (Nov 1, 2007 7:37:23 PM)
;)

LizOP (Nov 1, 2007 7:37:27 PM)
Ken, you may ask your question now.

KenOP (Nov 1, 2007 7:37:32 PM)
The survey showed that technology is used by people with MS at a higher rate than the general population. Do you think the survey showed any glaring problems that need rapid correction? Things take time but from what I have seen he collaborative seems dedicated to helping.

Sarah Peterson (Nov 1, 2007 7:38:08 PM)
That's a good question. I'm thinking...

Chatter 9 (Nov 1, 2007 7:38:21 PM)
may I add something while you are thinking?

Sarah Peterson (Nov 1, 2007 7:38:29 PM)
Please!

Chatter 9 (Nov 1, 2007 7:38:38 PM)
I work for the MS Society if you didn't figure that out!

Chatter 11 (Nov 1, 2007 7:38:47 PM)
?

Chatter 9 (Nov 1, 2007 7:39:14 PM)
One thing that we found was that people don't know a lot about technology that is already available/part of computers. We have been doing a lot of mass media outreach through TV and radio interviews, so that is a big start.

Chatter 9 (Nov 1, 2007 7:39:32 PM)
We also had a booth at our national conference last week providing accessible tech demos. So, we are starting to spread the word!

Sarah Peterson (Nov 1, 2007 7:40:07 PM)
I think it also showed the benefits of using accessible technology...

KenOP (Nov 1, 2007 7:40:33 PM)
Becca has been instrumental in coordinating the MS Technology Collaborative and supplying speakers for this series. Thank you.

Kat (Nov 1, 2007 7:40:46 PM)
TY!

Sarah Peterson (Nov 1, 2007 7:40:58 PM)
People who were using AT showed greater satisfaction on a lot of measures of the role technology plays in their lives: in terms of forging connections, keeping them engaged and providing information about treatments.

Chatter 11 (Nov 1, 2007 7:40:59 PM)
TY

Sarah Peterson (Nov 1, 2007 7:41:25 PM)
And I agree with what a great resource Becca is.

LizOP (Nov 1, 2007 7:41:42 PM)
Chatter 6, you may ask your question now.

LizOP (Nov 1, 2007 7:41:48 PM)
So do I agree

Kat (Nov 1, 2007 7:41:59 PM)
me 2

Chatter 6 (Nov 1, 2007 7:42:15 PM)
Where do we find what assistive technology is out there? I'm new to the MS thing.

Chatter 9 (Nov 1, 2007 7:42:17 PM)
thank you! this is a great project and your involvement has been great.

Sarah Peterson (Nov 1, 2007 7:42:50 PM)
Looking at the MyMSMyWay website is a great starting point, since they've compiled a lot of resource information...

Sarah Peterson (Nov 1, 2007 7:43:27 PM)
There's now a "snapshot tool" that asks people some targeted questions about their technology needs and challenges and then directs them to relevant resources.

Chatter 12 (Nov 1, 2007 7:43:49 PM)
?

Chatter 12 (Nov 1, 2007 7:44:08 PM)
Becca, I visited your booth at the conference and was very impressed. However, I am switching over to Mac and wanted to know about voice recognition software for the Mac. Any suggestions?

LizOP (Nov 1, 2007 7:44:18 PM)
Ragdoll, you may ask your question

RagdollOP (Nov 1, 2007 7:44:22 PM)
Sarah will there be future surveys we can help with? Thank you

Sarah Peterson< (Nov 1, 2007 7:45:09 PM)
We are in the planning phases for next year, so stay tuned. We want to make sure we apply the results of this one before going ahead with more research

LizOP (Nov 1, 2007 7:45:22 PM)
Chatter 8, you may ask your ?

RagdollOP (Nov 1, 2007 7:45:25 PM)
Thank you for the information

Chatter 8 (Nov 1, 2007 7:45:28 PM)
Will the MS collaborative, be doing a program for funding the projects such as for assisted devices or programs for people? And or is there a possibility of a trained staff members online with a remote support feature? As I do this with a lot of my current clients.

Sarah Peterson (Nov 1, 2007 7:4:44 PM)
Becca, do you want to address?

Chatter 9 (Nov 1, 2007 7:46:57 PM)
We are doing the pilot program now to train people to train other people about information around assistive technology, I'd like to hear more of what you mean, perhaps offline?

Sarah Peterson (Nov 1, 2007 7:47:06 PM)
?

LizOP (Nov 1, 2007 7:47:27 PM)
Sure Sarah. :) Ask away!

Sarah Peterson (Nov 1, 2007 7:48:03 PM)
I'm interested in hearing from people who took the survey about what the experience was like. I know it was long! (And a long time ago). Anything you can remember about whether the questions seemed relevant to you?

LizOP (Nov 1, 2007 7:48:26 PM)
Answer freely folks

Chatter 13 (Nov 1, 2007 7:48:34 PM)
NOT BAD

Sarah Peterson (Nov 1, 2007 7:48:36 PM)
Yes. I can take it :)

RagdollOP (Nov 1, 2007 7:48:42 PM)
it opened my eyes to a few things

Chatter 7 (Nov 1, 2007 7:48:53 PM)
It seemed fine to me

Kat (Nov 1, 2007 7:48:55 PM)
LOL....I’m thinking....

LizOP (Nov 1, 2007 7:48:57 PM)
I loved it. I like to do surveys online so I can think about it

RagdollOP (Nov 1, 2007 7:49:05 PM)
I like surveys also

LizOP (Nov 1, 2007 7:49:13 PM)
I do surveys with NARCOMS all the time.

Kat (Nov 1, 2007 7:49:17 PM)
I know it was easy to follow and interesting

Chatter 11 (Nov 1, 2007 7:49:19 PM)
and condensed it

KenOP (Nov 1, 2007 7:49:23 PM)
The survey was faster than most internet surveys but the results seemed to be slow coming.

Chatter 7 (Nov 1, 2007 7:49:36 PM)
NARCOMS is a very long survey

KenOP (Nov 1, 2007 7:49:47 PM)
Generally good job in my opinion.

LizOP (Nov 1, 2007 7:49:50 PM)
Yes it is but you can stop and restart

Kat (Nov 1, 2007 7:49:51 PM)
true Chatter 7

Sarah Peterson (Nov 1, 2007 7:49:51 PM)
That's the challenge of working with a large committee :)

Sarah Peterson (Nov 1, 2007 7:50:01 PM)
If we were to do future surveys on the topic of technology and MS what would be interesting to people?

LizOP (Nov 1, 2007 7:50:04 PM)
Or any committee :)

LizOP (Nov 1, 2007 7:50:09 PM)
Yes here

PeachOP (Nov 1, 2007 7:50:16 PM)
yes here

Chatter 13 (Nov 1, 2007 7:50:24 PM)
YES

LizOP (Nov 1, 2007 7:50:28 PM)
What would be interesting? Our experiences

RagdollOP (Nov 1, 2007 7:50:33 PM)
yes

Kat (Nov 1, 2007 7:50:36 PM)
maybe, if I had assistance would I make changes?

Chatter 7 (Nov 1, 2007 7:50:42 PM)
Ask what they use now that works for them and why

LizOP (Nov 1, 2007 7:51:11 PM)
We have 3 more questions. Ready Sarah?

Sarah Peterson (Nov 1, 2007 7:51:17 PM)
Ready

LizOP (Nov 1, 2007 7:51:19 PM)
Chatter 1, it is your turn to ask

Chatter 1 (Nov 1, 2007 7:52:05 PM)
oh mine was just a comment about using the snapshot tool as a way to find things out about voice recognition software

LizOP (Nov 1, 2007 7:52:16 PM)
Chatter 11, it is your turn to ask a question.

LizOP (Nov 1, 2007 7:52:20 PM)
Thanks Chatter 1

Chatter 11 (Nov 1, 2007 7:52:24 PM)
Thanks

Chatter 11 (Nov 1, 2007 7:52:26 PM)
Is there a trick to this tool that allows the user to gain area/regionally specific information?

Sarah Peterson (Nov 1, 2007 7:53:10 PM)
Good question. No, I don't think we have it down to that level of specificity. Again, that might be worth e-mailing Ellen Kampel about on the site.

Chatter 11 (Nov 1, 2007 7:53:29 PM)
m'kay - thanks for holding this!

Chatter 1 (Nov 1, 2007 7:53:39 PM)
can I answer that? I admit that I am a spy in that I am on the steering committee and was at the booth

Chatter 1 (Nov 1, 2007 7:53:44 PM)
Chris

LizOP (Nov 1, 2007 7:53:52 PM)
Hi Chris. :)
