MSOhio, Cyber Cafe and SP&PPMS Host
Hello, I am Sally, aka PeachOP, born and bred in Spartanburg, S. C. After I graduated from Columbia College, I moved to Knoxville, TN, for graduate work (MA 1965, Ph.D. 1968). I began my academic career in Akron, Ohio, as a full-time member of the English Department at the university where I taught English literature, freshman English, and poetry. My specialties were Chaucer and Arthurian legend. I founded the Arthurian Studies area for the Popular Culture Association. After thirty years of teaching, I retired – some years before I learned that I have MS.
Along the way, I married a wonderful man, and our (wonderful) son was born in 1977.
I was diagnosed with MS in 1999, though my symptoms had been masked by foot surgeries, so I don't really know how long I have had MS. The "foot thing" didn't let me realize that something else was wrong until I fell over in my front yard while talking to a friend. So I went to another doctor.
Having spent much of my life with great literature, I have learned that suffering is a large part of the human condition, but I have also learned that the human spirit is indomitable. Those heroes and heroines, and even the villains, are not defeated easily. It is also clear to me that everybody changes everyday.
With loving support, we who have MS also keep trying. It is a noble thing to do, and perhaps made even nobler because of the additional uncertainties that we live with. Fortunately, some of that loving support comes from groups like MSWorld who keep us mindful of the necessity of the good fight, of our responsibilities in the fight and the many people who help.
There is much to enjoy in life: baseball, grand opera, rock and roll, M&Ms, the ocean — you finish the list. People at MSWorld will help when we need to be reminded of other pleasures.
