Forever With Us

by Kathy Whitson, aka mtymac

This is something I wrote at a funeral for a friend who was killed on the
Chan O’ Lakes one summer six years ago now, by a drunk boater.
I was friends with both of the victims and this was an awful day.
Somehow putting this down on paper made me feel like
I kept a little piece of both of them in my heart.

We lost them both,
a terrible tragedy they say,
But beyond the comprehension

to most who arrive today
The sudden crash, the water that now seems cold.
How could this happen?

Then I was told . . .

“On a sunny day we joined together
for some fun on the lake,
Playing and swimming until the moon rose,
sending us back into a no wake.
A nightmare approaching too fast,
too dark to see, leaving us unaware
of a man who was drunk,
no lights on,
just driving too fast without a care.”

He sent our lives out of control that day,
leaving him with nothing he could say.
He took from us two lovely people,
never to laugh again.
All we are left to do is pray.

Two wakes, two funerals, two days to grieve.
Will someone tell me when will there be peace?

She will remain forever beautiful, forever young,
with her long flowing hair and slender figure
that was missed by the eyes, by no one.
Always caring and there for all.
Keeping her in our hearts
would do well for us all.

He will be remembered
for his easy and happy ways,
loving and kind to his wife and children.
A real friend to everyone.
He was someone’s husband, father, brother and son,
and he was taken from everyone.

The gifts the leave us
are the forever present memories.

We talk about them often
so they will remain a strong presence with us
and we tell their children who they were
and what they stood for.

In the events of life, the fates of many intertwine,
bringing joy and pain to all who belong.

It is pain's turn today

and hopefully, as there is always hope,

Joy will have a turn tomorrow.
