The Lost Diamond

by Randall Young

Some of the most frustrating words I ever hear from my wife are, “I have a story to tell”. Well, I have a story to tell – for once.

On graduation night, a socially awkward high school jock worked up the nerve to ask an even more socially awkward classmate for a date. She was poorer than poor – the daughter of a drifter school teacher and one of eight siblings. Well, to my amazement, she said “yes” to the date … and three months later said “yes” to my clumsy marriage proposal.

Well, fast forwarding 51 years to this morning, Glenna comes waltzing up to me and says “I have a story to tell,” and I think, “Oh no, here we go again.” Why do I dread these words so much when coming from someone who's been willing to put up with me that long?

It's simple. Glenna has to include every detail of the day, having nothing to do with the actual stories.  I think there may be some gender element involved here. Ya think?

She had lost the diamond out of her wedding ring while cleaning her closet. She has meticulously emptied the contents of the vacuum cleaner each time for months. So with the usual great detail, this morning the wife excitedly explains she has found the diamond she lost six months ago … in the crevice of her checkbook!

Weird, huh!?! But, nevertheless that’s the case. Incredible we think, considering how many times she has opened her checkbook here at home and in countless places to write a check.

No big deal you say? Well considering this was the third ring upgrade from the $29 for two matching gold rings 51 years ago to one with a real diamond, we are greatly relieved, as country bumpkins would be, not to mention the mystery of the lost diamond is solved!
