This is a true story. I tried this. If you have ever gone anywhere with me, you know this to be true and have probably chastised me for it. Hey, I tried to be tough. Hair didn't matter...... ~M

"The Black Bandana"

by Monica Petter

I thought I’d look tough, unapproachable.
No wispy hair – my experiment -
Nothing but my smile.

I had found it amidst the others
But this black one matched my shorts.
So I tied on “Go Texas”.

I looked like a tootsie roll pop

Half licked –

With dimples and eyes.

First stop
The grocery store –
Insert glasses and attitude.

I got my cart
Sure that no one would address me -
Fashion rag in place.

Caution on the first curve -
An attendant said hello
Foiled.

Red flag on isle nine -
A man bagging chips stared blatantly
Proving I didn’t need a head.

Busted at checkout –
Sweet old lady buying M&M’s
Struck up an “I’m never going to see you again, so here goes” conversation.

A man asked me for directions
And I pointed out toward town.
The bandana began to laugh –

It wasn’t about the hair,
But the easiness of the demeanor –
A very human approachability.

Verdict -

I’ll never meet a stranger.
