"Am I reaching?"

by Thomas M. Burgess

Feels like I have it within my grasp,

Then it always slips away from me

Just beyond my arms length it strays

Close enough to taste it in the air that I breathe

Always just beyond my reach.

Let me feel some of it,

let me live there, for just a time

Joy and sadness, they are both ready to be received

They seem to be an arms length away from me

Is that my heart I find living on my sleeve?

Every one sees it; still it’s just beyond my reach.

Am I reaching?
