My Friend Jack
by Samantha Austin

This past February, my horse Jack got really sick.
I was also “sick”  with problems that I still had no idea what they were. Well, after Jack was in the hospital for a week, he finally came home. He was home for about a week before my mom and I went to Cleveland Clinic to get my official MS diagnosis.

The day we got back, I finally got to see my best friend. He looked really good, but the following Tuesday, I went down to the barn to feed the other two horses that we have.  Jack stumbled over to his feed tub and went down in my arms.

I tried for nearly five hours to get him back up, but he was just too weak from all the weight he had lost over the last couple weeks. I finally made the decision that he had suffered enough and I had the vet put him down.

Jack was only five years old when he passed away.   I don’t spend one day without thinking about my old friend, and I go over and talk to him whenever I get the chance to. He was my lifeline throughout the whole time I was in “limbo” from not knowing what was wrong with me.
