"In Memory of Kay" born October 19th 1999, died August 6th 2000

Kay, one of our beloved Somali's, has been ill since around May 20th. I noticed he couldn't jump at the couch as easy as he did... We went to the vet, who took X-ray pictures. The picture showed nothing, so maybe he was injured by playing with his brother, the doctor thought. He was given a muscle injection (anabolic steroids), but this only helped a little, and just for a short time. The vet made a reference at the veterinarian hospital of the university in Utrecht, a very famous and the only one in the Netherlands. Kay was determined to have a rare muscle disease, and nothing could be done for the little fellow. He had muscle atrophy. We could see him die before our eyes. He got skinnier every day. His muscles were all gone. He couldn't walk any longer, just took a step, sat down, another step, lay down.... horrible. It wasn't clear if this disease was in his genes, or from metabolic problems; Kay could not be helped. But he was in his way playful. Kay was put to sleep August 6th by a final injection. He could not live any longer, cat worthy. It was so sad......... I think this was the best for him... he was just 9 months!!!!! His brother Balin was crying all the time for him, seeking, seeking.... The Somali's can't stay alone, or they become ill, as you may all know. Also, we don't have the time to mourn about the loss of Kay. We decided to look for another play mate for him.
We didn't want another Somali just now, maybe we were looking for another Kay, and there is only ONE Kay, I'm sure you understand what I mean. So, we went looking for quite another breed. I'm sure I'll get another Somali in a couple of months..... We found a Ragdoll kitten, Sequoia. In one way we were feeling so guilty, we already had taken another kitten; but we'll never forget Kay. He'll always be in our hearts. Ciska (LoveOP) and husband, Paul
