I was wondering if the washing out process of Aubagio is difficult. My doctor made it sound like there are a lot of gastro side effects? Anyone know?

I've done it. Basically, you drink a gritty solution (cholestyramine powder mixed into a liquid) 3x a day for 11 days. It says it tastes like orange juice, but it lies, so I dissolved mine in Tang. It's typically used for people with high cholesterol who can't use statins, and it's a higher dose than they use, so don't be surprised of the pharmacist questions the dose. Fortunately, a normal pharmacy should carry the stuff.
It binds with bile (where the Aubagio is stored) and pulls the bile out of your system. I am quite prone to gastric side effects (nausea, loose stool, etc.) but didn't notice anything too exciting about the washout. I was a little gassier, but that's all. My neuro thought it would be awful, but it really wasn't that bad once i got used to drinking the solution.

I'm new to MSW and have been reading lots about Abuagio. I wonder if washing out is necessary when you stop as I've been sickly for the past 13 days. The thought of doing the wash out after reading about it is sickening to me. I've had so many side effects and it has to be Aubagio. I stopped taking it 4 days ago. I haven't told my doc yet for fear she'll start me back on Copaxone. Any thoughts on the matter? Thanks

If you don't wash it out it stays in your body for 18 months to two years. It is stored in your bile, and that is how long it takes for your body to completely replace the bile in your system, hence the long time frame.
The wash out really isn't that bad. It's drinking gritty liquid and having looser (not diarrhea) stool as the bile is passed out of your body, but nothing too crazy. For me, it was so much more fun than the Aubagio side effects.
I went from Aubagio to Tecfidera and am doing so much better on it than any of the ther meds I've tried (Copaxone, Rebif, Avonex). Maybe it's time to talk to your doctor about what the next med would be to try, and ti discuss whether it's time to come off of Aubagio or to stay on it?
