    Lack of Sleep!

I know you too have sleep problems. It sucks all by itself but add in leaky bladder and you have a disaster waiting to happen!*
I read that there are about 80 different types of sleep disorders and over 70 million Americans who suffer from from them.*
Thats amazing to me. I would be interested in seeing the list of the 80 different sleep disorders. I mean really! How different can they be? So it makes me wonder which sleep disorder I have and how many of them of them I have had or have? How can a doctor tell which disorder you have and that every night you suffer from the same one? Maybe it's like multiply personalities??? I think I have multiple sleepalities!! Lol

I found an article that states many**people with multiple sclerosis complain of insomnia or broken sleep patterns, yet sleep problems may not directly be the result of the disease itself. Many sleep problems occur because of secondary factors such as stress, spasticity, inactivity, or depression or an increased need to go to the bathroom at night because of bladder problems *people with MS often have. Other symptoms of sleep problems may be caused by the location of MS lesions within the brain.

So if there are 80 possible sleep disorders and people with MS can have secondary factors. Then to me there have to be more then the 80 disorders. *I have no idea which sleep disorder I have. I have only been told I have insomnia. Maybe that is just the "catch all" of sleep disorders. I have stress, who doesn't! *I have depression, so do millions of people. I have a weak leaky bladder. So I am up all through the night. One night I hot up to go to the restroom. Next thing I know my husband is waking me up. I had fallen asleep on the toilet! Imagine that PJ's around my ankles, sitting up snoring! My husband laughing telling me "honey go back to bed"! Lastly you can bet your last dollar that I am inactive. I am inactive because I am fatigued, in pain and I can't go outside because it's too hot outside just to name a few. So I guess I do not see and end in site any time soon!*

Hopefully my toilet sleep days are over....but I just never know! Lol

Have a wonderful day!! Thanks for reading my blog. It makes me feel happy when I am helping others to laugh and forget their pain and troubles.*

    Thank you
    Christine

Have your Dr. order a sleep study. I'm surprised your neurologist hasn't already done this. With fatigue being so prevalent in MS, obviously a sleep disorder is just adding insult to injury.

And after your sleep study, you may want to get some relief from the bladder problems. I use LDN every night and I seem to sleep pretty soundly. I had a problem with waking up to urinate, which disturbed my sleep. I started taking a supplement called Uristatin and cut down on the amount of protein in my diet. This seems to have worked for me.

Thanks for making me laugh Christine! You paint such a sexy picture of yourself in your posts! I still can't get the vision of you using the blanket as a giant diaper out of my mind... and now the toilet sleeping. Dear Lord... girl, you are funny!

I have always had sleep problems and have used sleeping pills for over 25 years. My rule of thumb is that if I don't sleep well for two nights, I take a sleeping pill on the third night. A good night's sleep is so important to keeping one's resistance up and overall well-being. My doctors always supported me on this.

Sleep is not a problem with me

I slept 10 hours last night. I can believe falling asleep on the toilet too It's not a problem men have.

I just did a post on my sleep or lack there of. Your posts are way better than mine though. Thanks for the laugh. Okay I am gonna try and sleep now. Lets see if I can stay asleep for more than an 1-1/2 before I wake up for the night.

I did have a sleep study done several years ago (before the MS) all they offered me was a doctor for my snoring. Maybe I just snore myself awake every hour or 2 and that is why I don't sleep anymore.

                lisa1014,
Your snoring is a possible sign of sleep apnea. If you don't work to correct that condition you are at risk for serious conditions like stroke or heart attack. My brother just suffered a heart attack and, coincidently, he has snored terribly for years.
Please believe me. It's nothing to ignore. I have sleep apnea and wear a CPAP every night. Get a sleep study done and work to remedy your snoring. Good luck

When I had my study done I did not have apnea. I do keep an eye on it as my brother and dad both have to use c-pap machines.

                  Thanks for the concern.

                    Waking up

I wake in the middle of the night, after 2-3 hours of sleep and I'm wide awake. This has been happening for the past month or so. I stay up all day so I can sleep better at night, and the same thing happens again.
I know it is related, whether directly or indirectly, to the MS. I just feel so blah and unhealthy because of lack of sleep.

                      sleep problems

I understand the sleep problems so, so well. You gave me a big laugh though about falling asleep on the toilet. I don't mean that in anyway except the visual was a chuckle in my head.

Anyway, I just had a sleep study that showed severe sleep apnea and now have a CPAP machine and a mask that makes me look like a space alien, but it helps. Because of the MS I have nerve damage on the left side of my tongue and throat. That affects my breathing at night thus the help from the CPAP machine.

You need to check with your insurance company but I didn't even need a doctor's referral. I called, got an appointment the next week and within another week I had the sleep study. One of the best things I have done.

Good luck with the sleeping. I feel for you and wish you the best.

                        Sleep Disorders

Thanks..I hadn't thought of sleep apnea caused by MS, but that does make sense. I'm sure it would be adding to the fatigue too.
Most of the problem though is that while my body seems tired, I get that overtired, restless feeling and it will keep me up all night. If I take a sleeping med, my body still wants to move so then I'm like a walking zombie. I am stoked when I wake up and realize that I managed to stay asleep for over 4 hours.
What a cruddy disease. I used to think that MS was just this thing where people get increasingly weak...didn't know that all of this other stuff also goes with it. How scary.

                          movement in sleep

                          Hi again.

I also have very jerky muscle movements as soon as I get tired and also in my sleep. VERY disruptive to say the least!!!! When I went for my sleep study the doctor there prescribed Neupro patches (2) I place on my arm. This med calms the nerves/muscles down and the CPAP machine helps with the apnea. I am FINALLY getting in a deep sleep.

PLEASE GO GET A SLEEP STUDY!!!!

At this point getting a sleep study run couldn't hurt but could probably give you must needed answers and relief. If you go, please let me know what happens. I am not trying to be nosey, but I am VERY CONCERNED!

My heart reaches out to you and I want to run you in to a center myself!

Here's a thought: when did you last get a mattress? I'd been sleeping on 20+ year old mattresses my whole life and decided to save and get a new one. I didn't get anything fancy, but it was a different softness than the one's I've used before and has the cooling technology in it. Anywho's....I need less sleep, needless to say my fatigue lessened (but it still there), a whole lot of my aching muscles are happier and I get less of the "mornings" (paresthesia in the morning for like an hour). In fact, I haven't had the "mornings" since I got my new mattress.

Obviously that's not a fix (for me it's been a marked improvement but obviously not a fix), and I'd still go with a sleep study. But it's a thought.

Sleep studies seem to be the rage right now. As far as I can see, the only thing they can detect is Sleep Apnea. Sleep disorders are classified as: Sleep Apnea, having trouble falling asleep, having trouble staying asleep, waking up early or any combination of the above, as I have.

Then, there are discomforts of illness that interrupt sleep. My doctor was really stingy about sleep medication until she got a chance to observe me in the hospital. No sleep the first night, no sleep the second night, no sleep the third night, no sleep the fourth night. On the fifth night she gave me a strong a infusion of Ativan. Ahhhh sleep [for 3 hours] until the linen thief woke me up. When I got home the pharmacy was stocked with prescriptions for Restoril, Valium and Xanax.

I don't know what the answer is to sleep problems. I take medications, but I have to keep them to a minimum and endure nights of not sleeping so they will still work.

My father suffered severe sleep problems. He would take a medication for awhile and when he decided he had to go off of it, my sister would drive him around Los Angeles all night for 3 days. He just toughed it out. The last year of his life he told me "I just can't sleep anymore." On October 21 of that year, he died. Insomnia is very hard on our bodies.

My doctor believes we shouldn't tough out our suffering because the MS will progress. and maybe we will die.
