Numbness While Sleeping

Hey guys!

For the past few weeks, when I lay down in bed, both hands go numb and stay numb until morning and I get out of bed. I have no clue why but it's a little weird. And it doesn't happen if I lay down during the day for a nap, only at night.

Anyone experience anything similar or have any clue as to why it happens?

Thanks for any help!

Lay Down Sally

I don't know where that came from, just getting older.

I get a numbness in my legs and hands when I lay down. It can be during the middle of the day, but like you it tends to act up at night.

I have no idea where it comes from I just want one day to be normal.

JUST ONE!!!!

Normal is no fun! But at least I'm not the only one with weird numbness! Thanks for your reply!

related to sleeping position??

My hands are also numb at night while I sleep and sometimes my whole arm(s). And like you, they are not as numb during the day. It is a significant difference. I just thought it must be related to how I am positioned when I sleep. Are you a back sleeper of side or belly? I lay on my side and both arms/hands go numb. But I wonder if I layed flat on my back if I would have the same issue?

When I get up, the numbness subsides. But when I first wake up I can't feel my hands.

I usually start out on one side then change position 5 or 6 times throughout the night. Most mornings I wake up on my stomach, though occasionally on my back. But no matter what position I am in, my hands are still numb when I wake up...

My hands started doing that for awhile a couple of years ago. I finally figured out that when I was asleep, for some reason my hands were bending at the wrist and I guess, cutting of the circulation just enough to go numb. I'd have to shake them awake when I woke up.

It took me ages to get out of the habit and I have no idea why I did it to begin with.

Funny you ask. I've been wondering the same thing and have had this off and on for the last ten years. It came on again with this flare up, and now that I'm on prednisone is gone - except when I'm flaring up on top of the prednisone. Then I feel it a little, but not like the intense tingling numbness that was there before.

I had an NCV on the arms that was normal, so it's not carpal tunnel. At least that's what the test showed.

My feet and legs are starting to get tingly and numb too. That is new since the flare up this summer. It also gots better when on prednisone, and is increasing again a little along with the hand/forearm tingling while my fever is up these last few days.

I had this happen a few years back. Also had NCV to rule out carpal tunnel. My doc had me wear a wrist brace thingy to keep it from bending and that solved the problem! Guess the bending was cutting off circulation (like Carol). I don't have to wear the brace anymore...

Try this first and see if it helps!

I too have this problem and I have tried wearing the braces. They have not helped. After all these years I guess I have gotten used to it. I don't sleep all that much anyway so it is not as much of a bother as it was in the beginning.

I have found that when I lay down is when there is pressure on my neck which can cause issues anywhere below the neck. I have alot of disc, bone spurs and MS issues in my neck.

I am not dx as of yet. Waiting to see specialist. But, I have terrible numbness at night in my arms, hands, legs and feet and sometime my ear. It does not matter how I lay.
My hands were so bad that they would be completely numb including my arms and the pain is unreal once I start moving them to get things moving again. (I think this is like a person with frostbite....once they start to thaw, that is when the pain starts) I had a EMG and was told I only have slight carpol tunnel and that doctor said he never see sym that bad with ct anyway. My right upper leg is numb all the time and as soon as I get in bed and roll on that leg it starts to tingle and crawl and if I turn back the crawling goes away.
If I ride in a car where I have to sit for a length of time, my hands turn numb then, too. So, I don't think it is how I lay in bed. I think it has something to do with not moving for a period of time and the longer that time is the worse it gets.
I am still hoping to find out what is going on with me....but it sounds like this is a common ms sym.

I used to have to get steriod shots in my thumbs and have tried using the braces I have to see if it would help... It hasn't. But now at least I know that I'm not the only one that it happens to. Thanks for all of the replies, everyone!

MS sucks no matter what...but

It's funny how comforting it is to know your not alone. It doesn't change anything...but it sure helps to know you are not "THE ONLY ONE!!!" For me... knowing someone has had the same thing (symptoms) and survived to write about it. Gives me strength to cope.
