Jimmie Heuga has passed away. So Sad. He was a Hero and a Legend!

We are saddened by the passing of Jimmie Heuga. He was the Founder of the Heuga Center for MS and an Olympic Bronze Medalist.

Jimmie Heuga was a hero and an inspiration to so many of us living with MS!

A few articles follow in remembrance of the positive impact he made on so many:

From the National MS Society:

From Can Do Multiple Sclerosis:

Jimmie Heuga's passing on Feb. 8 came exactly 46 years after he won his Bronze medal at the 1964 Innsbruck Olympics:

Nice article from the Denver Post!

Here's a nice article from the Denver Post. There's also a very good slide show on the left side under Extras.

Jimmie Heuga, Olympic ski hero, dies of MS at 66:

Cause of Death?

I was wondering what caused his death. 66 is young. Only thing I have seen is he had had a respiratory infection.

KK:
Since with MS your body has problems fighting infections because you take medicine to either suppress your immune system because it over works, or your body is ALWAYS working over board and you are ALWAYS sick with something (so it seems). This is why things that seem 'not a big deal' to some people, like a respitory system, is a BIG deal and can turn to Pnemonia or other complications very easily. So having a respitory infection actually can be a big deal to some MS patients, I know it is with me-doctors keep a close eye on this. It can become serious very fast.

Just wondering

I have been told by many doctors that people with MS usually die from aspiration pneumonia. That is considered a respiratory condition.

I surely hope it wasn't that horrible flu. He seemed so active.

Smile I met him in Colorado, and he was truly an inspiration...

So sad to hear. But everyone that has MS should pay attention to his life and what he did to make his life worth living. He gave all of us a choice in this life with MS-to accept the "go home and make the best of it" advice, OR to work to understand how the disease affects everything-AND how to strengthen our bodies and minds to work against it. Jimmie Heuga showed us how to become an ADVOCATE for ourselves.
And for that I am so grateful.
Thank you Jimmie!

I didn't know him personally and to date I believe this is the fourth person I've heard of dying from MS. Although not terminal some of the complications I know can be life threatening. I'm sure as a person Jimmy was an awesome person adapting to the cruel disease of MS.

However, the Heuga Center now called Can Do MS, the programs are sooooo expensive. There is no way I could ever afford to go to any of them. I'm regulated to the freebie MS programs from the drug treatments and my local MS Chapter.

Rest in peace Jimmy!!
