Carefully surviving the heat

Hi, this is Stacey, I'm 41 yrs old & have had MS for 10yrs. Wanted to join a chat room for MS patients to be able to bounce ideas around on symptoms and coping skills in order to endure this mysterious, sometimes depressing disease.
Ive been on Avonex now for 9.5 yrs, and sometimes wonder where I'd be at physically had I not made the decision to go on a med at that time. For the most part I do well, I call myself a functioning MS patient, meaning I work 32+ hrs/wk, have a loving, understanding family & a faith in which I stand firmly on. This heat of ours here in MI is unreal, been staying in a/c when I can. I struggle the most with not being able to do all the things I used to, and have not come to a full grip on this. I usually push myself to do more than I should, but Im very hard on myself to do more. Any others out there with this struggle, and any suggestions?

Hi Staceyhon,

Welcome. Glad you found us. This is a great place to share ideas on how to cope with this dis-ease.

I too am on Avonex. Just took my third injection last night. I'm trying to get used to it because I was on Copaxone for almost 1 1/2 years.

I spend most of my time in the a/c because of the heat waves here in PA. I realize I can't do all that I used to do but I celebrate what I do accomplish. Sometimes I push a little to do extra but really pay for it afterwards.

Staceyhon, feel free to share thoughts, ideas or just vent here. This is the right place.

Take good care.

from MI too

Hi staceyhon
I am from MI as well and the weather is beautiful. I am trying my best to behave because my sx'm go crazy. I have sensory damage so my hands, legs and feet get all tingly and sometimes I lock up. I love the sun and the heat so much though so I torcher myself and then have to take a cold shower and a nap afterwards.

WELCOME STACYHON!!!!!!!! great to have you here! I often times push myself to far, and every time, the next day rolls around and I just looked back and shake my head (and I usually mutter something to myself). I am just down the road from you and Pennsylvania (maybe a little more than just down the road) and we have also struggled with the heat. My only suggestion is that you rest when you can. I have found after 12 years of this, is that if I am more rested I can do more. Good luck
