Weightloss Checkin Group: Weighin for 10/20/11

Hi Everyone. Goodness, this week has gone be quickly. It will soon be time for all of the ghosts and goblins to come out. Be careful about what you stock up on for trick-or-treat. Try to purchase no more than what you expect to give out and don’t open any packages until the day in question. Get rid of the left overs quickly. No sense in having those sugar laden morsels around as a temptation. Keep in mind that the major Holidays will be here before you know it and you will want to look gorgeous. Having said that, I gained half a pound this week. That is the signal for me to start reversing the trend. I now weigh 114.5 which is within the acceptable range.

Mtnwillow, sorry to miss you this week. I hope we hear from you soon.

Poohbar, it sounds like you lucked out this week after falling off the wagon so to speak. I am sure you will regain your momentum and resume losing.

Sparky, you have done a great job over the years. Holding your own is what it’s all about. I am sure you will continue keeping those pounds off. Keep on truckin’.

MamaBug, I am truly sorry about your gain, but just remember it is only temporary. You have come such a long way and a little slip occasionally is not surprising. I know you will get back on track.

Agate, so glad to see you back. Staying the same is a good place to be considering all the weight you have lost. And to lose a few extra pounds gradually would be icing on the cake, and that kind of cake isn’t fattening! LOL

Hunterd, I’m putting you down for staying the same because it sounds like you have been doing the right things and are not sure of a definite gain. Keep up the good work and your clothes will resume getting bigger. Good luck.

Audima, good going. A two pound loss is outstanding. You are definitely doing the right things. I envy you your water aerobics. Those are great activities that you mention. Keep up the momentum and you will reach that goal before you know it.

For those who may have an interest in joining our dedicated group, our members each have their own personal methods of weight loss. Some are on Weight Watchers, some on Atkins for example and some just cut calories. I personally lost quite a lot of weight in the beginning using Atkins and then just cut portions while eating everything. The method is not the most important thing, it is staying focused and following the plan.

We post weight loss, gain, stayed the same, from Thursday to Thursday and have been doing so for over eight years. We are truly dedicated to get rid of those pesky pounds and keep them off. You don’t have to state your actual weight. It’s a matter of choice.

Tip for the Week:

Sometimes staying motivated for losing weight becomes a problem. There are several issues to consider during this process.

Never forget the purpose for which you are losing weight. If you're losing weight to look attractive, say that out loud every morning "I'm going to lose weight and look attractive". If you're losing weight to be healthy, say "I'm losing weight to be healthy".

Never forget the benefits of losing weight. Imagine how energized you be, the level of impact it will have on your productivity, how attractive you will be.

Keep a picture of yourself when you were overweight with you at all times. Whenever you feel like eating fattening food, ask yourself "Do I want to be like this forever?" If you have already lost some weight, ask yourself "Do I want to be this again?"

Keep a picture of your favorite actor/actress, player or model. Whenever you feel unenthusiastic, take a look at his or her abs, legs, hips and tummy. This will make you want to be like him or her and might give you the stimulus you need.

Look at yourself in the mirror everyday and visualize you being slim and trim the way you always wanted.
Watch fitness and exercise related TV shows every day. After looking at people working out and eating healthy, it might encourage you to do the same.

Look at before and after pictures. Internet is flooded with these types of pictures; a simple search at Google will bring thousands of results.

Make the exercise a fun activity; listen to your favorite music or watch a movie of your choice while you are on a treadmill. You will be surprised how much extra walking/jogging you can do while watching a movie.

The most important tip would be to learn what works for you. It might be fitting into your favorite clothes, showing your abs at the beach, etc.

Weight loss Results for 10/13/11:
Total Loss:

3 pounds by two members. That is terrific. You are on the right path. Keep up the good work.

Total Gain:

1.9 pounds by two members. Don’t fret. Everyone has down times. Don’t be discouraged. Things will get better. Admitting the painful truth is a step toward changing things for the future. .

Stayed the same:

3 members. As we know, staying the same truly is success, especially for those who are maintaining. Just keep remembering it is the time before the next loss if you have more to lose.

3191.2 is the total weight loss for the past 9 years. Now that we have hit 1.5 tons we are on our way to losing two tons.

I am still going down - not a lot, but still moving. Down 1.3 lbs and now weight 139. Moved from the 140s to 130s and sure looks good on the scale. My goal is 130, so hope to reach it before Christmas.

I am still doing the water exercises and water volleyball, but having real issue with legs lately - they are just getting weaker and heavier and harder to get around - I'm afraid the w/c is getting closer.

for many reasons, i`m dropping out of the group. i don`t have access to scales, so it`s a complete guess on the weight each week. i wish you all luck in your quest to reach your goal. GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!!!

Will miss you HunterD.

Have you tried a tape measure, instead of a scale?

oh hunterd! i'll miss you!!! but don't worry, i'll find someplace else to harass you!

UGH! i'm so disgusted i really thought about taking a pass this week, but i won't. the ugly truth. GAINED 1.1 lbs. 169.8
i'm now bouncing around the 170 mark. i worked so hard to get below it. steroids are over, but the effects are far from gone. i sleep so much it's interfering with daily life.
and whenever i awake i 'feel' hungry. guess body's normal reaction to sleeping. naps can be up to 4 hr long! so my clock and metabolism must be totally off.
there's a game night (where we play games, eat, play cards, eat.... ) but i WILL only eat a very small plate of good choices. if i don't do that at the beginning of the night, i'll be nibbling on cookies while playing and that won't do!
wish me strength!

hunterd, that's too bad about the scales! A lot of stores seem to have scales if you can get to them instead. Or how about Mamabug's idea about a tape measure?

I stayed the same--112.

One problem I have is watching movies on DVD at home. I always make a bowl of popcorn to go with the movie. I'm cutting down on the amount of popcorn now--going from 2 Tbsp. to 1 Tbsp. and finding I don't mind too much. I add a teaspoon of melted butter and a bit of salt.

Hunterd, I'm so glad you decided to stay. You are a very important part of our little group. Using a tape measure is a really good way to assess progress. Blessings, Karen

Just FYI Dave --

I used to lose about an inch in my waist for every 6 pounds on the scale that I lost. Now, as I get closer to goal, it's more like an inch for every 4 pounds I lose.

So, if you have results that are anywhere similar, 1/4" on the tape measure should be between .75 lb and 1.0 lb. Or, 1/2" would be 2-3 pounds.

I like the store idea too. In the Walmart scale section, if any of the scales come with batteries, you could weigh yourself there, even if it's only once or twice a month.

Got space for one more?

Hi all,

I would like to join you if that is okay. I started trying to lose weight October 2009, and I had great success in the first year. I went from a BMI of 35 (obese) to 25 (upper limit of normal). My initial weight loss was 62 lbs, but my current net loss is 41 lbs.

Admittedly I have kept if off mostly, but it is starting to creep back up on me over the past few months. I'm currently at a BMI of 28.8 (overweight) and all the clothes I bought to celebrate my weight loss are getting a pinch too tight. : (

My initial goal is a normal BMI (less than 26) and my ultimate goal is an "ideal" BMI of 22. I also have some exercise and fitness goals, including exercising more days than I don't and getting back into running.

I could really use some support because I have gotten into the habit of "just one X won't hurt." While it is true that one won't hurt, one several times per day every day will hurt!

Thanks!
-Jennie

Jennie --

Welcome to our weekly thread. I'm sure that Karen will also be along, soon, to welcome you. I like the way you think -- that's it not all about weight.

I have, also, used my BMI to help me to set goals. I started at almost a 32 BMI. I reached a "healthy" BMI of 25 in April.

However, because I'm a small frame, I really believe that I need to be at the low end of "healthy", and I'm currently at a BMI of 21.2. Would like to get down around 18.5 BMI, as I think that is what it will take for me to get my waist-height ratio down to the 50% range. (Waist-height ratio is another "number" that I use, to help me to set goals.)

My height is 5'3" (63"), so I need to lose another 2-3" in my waist to get it down to a 31.5" (50% of 63"); that will help to lower my risk of cardiovascular disease and Type II Diabetes.

You're right, Jennie, about the danger of the "just one time won't hurt" syndrome. I'd suggest allowing yourself a "one time" (not several times a day) about twice a week, and say no other times, until you get your weight back where you want it to be. After that, you can begin to experiment with giving yourself a few more extra treat "allowances".

~ Faith
