Desipramine for break-through pain.....
I just wondered if anyone has been on this drug for anything other than depression.
I've been on amitriptyline for years for IBS, then for back spasms and as my neuro said I didn't need it as the Neurontin has the same effect, I went off it and it was LOVELY not to have that AWFUL ![]() dry mouth! I actually think it's a reaction with the Neurontin, b/c I never had that before. But it was great stopping the amitriptyline because I woke up lively instead of groggy in the morning and was sleeping better as I wasn't constantly waking up to wet my parched throat. So, today I'm picking up Rx for Desipramine as my neuro said that wouldn't give me the dry mouth or grogginess in the AM. I'm not sure if my current pain - VERY sensitive back, even a bump in the road driving to work caused a lot of pain, and I don't know if I'm having this BECAUSE I stopped the amitript., about a month ago. Anyway, I just wondered if anyone else had tried it and if it helped. Thanks! ![]()

I'm not really talking to myself here....
....but I just wanted to update this post I started about desipramine, in case anyone else ever needs the info.
I had a miserable day yesterday at work, and it didn't help that I have a pinched nerve in my tailbone to boot. My back was SOOO sensitive and sore, and my waist line so irritated. The desipramine that was prescribed to help with pain, the same way amitriptyline is used for, came in a 10mg pill and I was directed to take one daily. I took the first pill at 7:30pm last night, about the same time I did my Rebif shot, and I woke up this morning with a lot less soreness in my spine and back, and today at work, well, I don't want to say it's all gone, but it is SOOOOOOO much better than it's been for the past week or so when things just flared up. It looks like it's given in doses of 150mg - 300mg to treat depression, but this nice low dose for pain has really provided a lot of relief already from the pain I'd been in. So I just wanted to update this in case anyone is ever given an Rx and can't find anything about it! All the best from a lot happier me! ![]()

Final update....
I've taken desipramine for 3 or 4 nights now, and last night was AWFUL! I woke up several times feeling as tho' my heart was pounding, but by the time I could actually FEEL my pulse, it actually wasnt a pounding heartbeat, it was a quivering in the core of me, right where you feel the "chill" to the core of you with the "flu-like" side fx w/the interferons, the chill I'd had from my shot of Rebif the night before.
Anyway, the pill that I'd taken at 7pm Friday night had me still feeling uncomfortable, like there was a quivery feeling in my "core" - almost like I'd had too much caffeine w/o the external jitters. This pill didn't give me dry mouth and it didn't make me groggy, I think it had the opposite effect, but it also didn't help out with the pain like amitriptilyne either. After speeaking w/the pharmacist I going BACK to amitript., ASAP and I will not mind the dry mouth(that has only happened since I added Neurontin to the picture!), or the grogginess that I get in the mornings from the amitriptyline. This is a med I have taken for many, many years for various problems such as IBS, long before I was dx'd w/MS, but many years after my first symptom of MS. I should never have stopped taking this and I can't wait for it to be back in my system and reducing the neuropathic pain I have. This time I should have listened to myself and not my doctor. But as they say, medicine is a science and and art, and what works for one doesn't necessarily work for another! But I should have known better.... and have paid the price for not having left well alone! ![]()

I just picked up a prescription for desipramine for pain. and reading about your experience with it is very helpful. The side effects of most new prescriptions I get make me too nervous to even try the drug!
Does anyone else have experience with using this for neuropathic pain? |
