Boston Area MS Centers at Big Teaching Hospitals

I've started this journey with a general neurologist I like. He was trained at one of Boston's biggest/well-known teaching hospitals and is now on the North Shore, part of a group practice. He does not list MS as one of his clinical interests, but I'm sure he's more than capable of getting me off to a good start. However, I live near some of the best MS resources in the world. Should I receive my care there? Has anyone here been to MGH, Brigham & Women's, or Beth Israel Deaconess? Many thanks in advance for sharing your opinions and experiences.

Partners MS Clinic at Brigham and Women's

I switched from a more local neurologist to Partners MS Center when I first started the diagnosis process. The differences are night and day! I highly recommend this practice. They never make me feel stupid for calling with a question/concern, always get a person on the phone and my doctor calls back personally that day. I can't say enough about how happy I am I switched.

Definitely check out some of the neurologists who specialize in MS at one of Boston's teaching hospitals. The proximity to such care was one of the reasons why I moved to NYC.

Going to an MS specialist at a hospital (or practice) may enable you to try new medicines or therapies and/or put you i touch with other MS resources.

      Good luck!

Ok, this could be the cog fog here...but when I looked it up online, I couldn't find any MS Centers at the hospitals in Boston. I live about 90 minutes from Boston, but used to go every three months to take my daughter to Joslin. I would be very interested in knowing which places there are. We only have 2 "specialists" for MS.

I have to agree though. The difference is night and day. Joslin was far superior to local endocrinologists. The care was more thorough, the staff much nicer...just so many benefits! If you can switch, it might definitely be worth it.

This is the biggie. I'm having to wait until October for an appointment, but I'm hoping my general neurologist can get me in sooner: http://www.partnersmscenter.org

Also, check out this amazing work by Ann Romney (and read her book, In This Together):

There are also MS Clinics at Lahey in Burlington.

I've seen MS specialists at MGH and Lahey Clinic and really liked them. I currently go to a specialist in a smaller teaching hospital because of insurance. I know several people who go to BI and really like it there. I, also, went to a conference run by BWH MS Center and really liked the MD and NP who presented lectures.
Lots of good people in this area.

              Finding an MS Specialist

In my experience, it's been important to find an MS Specialist who has experience with thousands (or at least many hundreds) of MS patients.

Check out this link from the National MS Society:

              Hope the above is helpful.

              All The Best,
              Alan

Hi alanpgh, just curious--do you see someone in the Pittsburgh area for MS? I became very disillusioned by the treatment that I was receiving via one of the major local healthcare systems here, so I now travel to Cleveland Clinic's Mellen Center instead. If you don't want to say publicly, I understand.

I've also been to Cleveland for second opinions. Very good!
