    low lymphocytes?

I just had blood drawn because I'm having a hysterectomy in 10 days. (they found a mass that is possibly cancerous - will know after they do the pathology - what fun

My lymphocytes are now down to 960. I have been on Tec about 1 1/2 years and since last June they have dropped from 2070 to 960. I was seeing that anything under 1000 is considered low. I am now concerned with getting an operation because there is always a risk of infection...I am going to ask my neuro on Mon if I should discontinue meds.

Anyone else with lowered/low lymphocytes from Tec and did you have to quit the meds?

    Hi VikingKitty,

A lymphocyte count of 800 is the beginning of the normal range. I had to quit tecfidera due to my count dropping to 260.

      Hi allHailye2,

Wow! 260 is definitely low...I am going to be seeing my neuro Sept 10th and discuss my levels with him. I know mine aren't too bad but I don't want to them to continue to drop and get to where it's a problem.

When I see him, I'm going to ask him about taking a 3 month break just to give my body time to let everything level back out. We'll see what he has to say.

I am wondering what your scale reads! I have consulted an hematologist/oncologist about my blood levels and the report was that my levels of .80 is a little below the standard range of 1.00 to 8.00, or something like that. I have sent an email to my PCP for further clarification. My neurologist told me to stop taking LDN because he suspects that the combination of Tec and LDN may be the cause of my low lymphocyte count.

Mine is 260 too after only 11 months of tec. My lymphocytes have been 0.5 on the last 2 tests. I have by third in January, and unless and miracle occurs, I will be taken off it. Im already unable to take inteferon, copaxone as my wbC bombs on these too, and Im allergic to Tysabri. I cant take Fingolimod as that will definitely lower my WBC more so that the inteferons.
Looks like I shall be going it alone until Ocrelizumab comes out in 2017. Will just eat healthy and look after myself best i can i guess

            Elevated lymphocytes

What does it mean if your lymphocytes are elevated?

Hi MrsChip, If you do go off all FDA meds for a time you may want to consider one or more of the alternatives used by many MSers... LDN, ALA, EGCG, etc.

Jerry, while a scientific basis for thinking the combination of tec and LDN would cause a decrease in counts is dubious, at best, there is no doubt that tec alone does cause the decreases we see even when LDN is not present.

LDN is metabolized in 4-6 hours, that is scientific fact disputed by no one with even a rudimentary knowledge about it. After that, there is no LDN left in the body, it is gone. Things not present likely decrease lymphocytes by little, IMO. Besides, when LDN is present, LDN's mechanism of action is the OGF-OGFr axis. Google the Sept 2, 2011, ScienceDaily article, "Low-dose naltrexone (LDN): Tricking the body to heal itself".

I'm just not sure how anyone could arrive at the conclusions your doctor mentioned, Jerry. Of course, if your follow-up tests improve, that will be great! However, there is no scientific evidence LDN lowers counts as mentioned but there is abundant evidence that tec does. Ask your doctor for a scientific reference for his position. I believe you will find it opinion only and he won't be able to provide scientific evidence for that opinion, either.

The 2016 LDN conference is in Orlando, FL February 19,20,21 for anyone interested. You can Google it for topics and presenters if you wish.

My lymphocyte count is down to. 8. My neurologist mentioned if it gets down to. 5, that is have to come off. It really sucks, because I've had no other issues on tec for 18 months.

                  Myoak,
Thanks for your response to my post regarding LDN and Tecfidera. I was suspicious that my MS specialist was not totally convinced that the combination of the two drugs was the cause of my low lymphocytes. Nevertheless, I have been following his advice and I will have my blood tested next week. After the results are in, the whole medical team will be 'informed' of the truth. It's so great to be part of the experiment ! Good luck
