    Immense jaw pain, please help

Guys please help me out here, I seriously hope someone can help. Tuesday evening last week I had this slight jaw pain but it was bearable. When I woke up, the day after however the jaw on my right side was completely locked. Couldn't open it up far, eating was difficult, talking, brushing teeth etc.

So I decided to go to the doctor on Friday as the pain was just too much and he said the muscle in my jaw is inflamed so I will have to take some Ibuprofen a few days and it will be better. However, 4 days have passed and it's not better at all. I'd even say that it's pretty much the same. The pain is driving me crazy just like that I can't eat or talk properly anymore. The worse is I can't brush my teeth properly which doesn't help either as I don't want any cavities. I literally just barely can put a pinky finger in my mouth. It's that sad urgh.

Has anyone here experienced this? I have Tysabri on Thursday and I'm so afraid they will just give it and it might make the inflammation much worse. Any advice?

PS: totally blaming Tysabri for this, I've never had this and with Tysabri I'm having the weirdest inflammations urgh, looks like I can add this to my list.

I had that happen once or twice decades before MS. I would go see an acupuncturist and see what he/she could do for it. The jaw muscle is contracted. I had TMJ. You might be grinding your teeth at night- you could get a mouthguard from a dentist.

Thanks for responding! I do sometimes grind my teeth actually but I haven't in my months, at least not that I know of. I asked my dentist about the guard but she said I didn't needed it, so that's that. Haven't had an experience with an acupuncturist but I'm going to search for one thanks, anything that can heal this process quicker pf.

3 weeks on Ibuprofen and I still can't open my mouth properly. The pain definitely is better but only when I take an Ibuprofen. Already called my doctor and he literally has no clue why it's not healing. I feel like the Tysabri might have some kind of effect, but the hospital told me the Tysabri wouldn't have any effect on my inflamed jaw muscle... Gawd I just want to eat and clean my teeth properly for once

Oh forgot to mention but I seem to be biting a lot more often on my tongue or the inside of my cheek/mouth while eating. Maybe it's compensation because my left jaw is doing everything, but it's a bit strange.

Have you tried a muscle relaxer like Baclofen? If your jaw is locked up it's probably the muscles so therefore relaxing these may help??

Good one thanks, doc said it's inflamed though so I don't know how much it's going to help but I can try I guess. Hope I have Baclofen laying around here somewhere! I just hope it's not something MS-ish because it does sometimes feel like it's spasming. Or maybe I'm just biting on my teeth all the time while I'm sleeping making the jaw muscle cramp. No clue anymore!

Hey Dexter - I have had this before and it was not related to MS, but Dr said it was TMJ from grinding my teeth at night. That may or may not be your situation.

Here's some info from WebMD in case you're interested:
                http://www.webmd.com/oral-health/gui...-disorders-tmd

I have tried acupuncture but what has helped me the most was a chiropractor who uses a very gentle approach.

After 3 weeks, you should try something different than Ibu - it didn't touch it for me. In the meantime try eating only soft foods and don't try to force opening your mouth to the point that it hurts.

Hope you can find relief soon!

                  Little update

^ My doctor actually said the same thing, I used to grind my teeth but as far as I know I don't anymore... But hey who knows what I do while sleeping lol.

Just a little update, the pain has gotten a lot less now, mornings are still the worse though. As far as opening my mouth there doesn't seem to be much progress, about a finger between my teeth I'd say. But what I've noticed, is this huge hard lump near my jaw which I guess could be an inflamed lymph node? Or just the muscle that is inflamed? Anyway, I'll be calling my doc again tomorrow and he better have another solution to this problem...

About a month after I started Tysabri, I got terrible jaw pain. I already had had a diagnosis of TMJ and use a night guard but it wasn't helping. Finally, I went to ER. They did a CT scan and sent me home. "Everything is fine." they told me.

Two days later I had a doctor's appointment. After we got finished with the appointments, I told her, "By the way, I've even having some pain in my jaw lately." She said, "let me look at that CT scan."

After looking at the scan she came back and said, "you have an infection in your jaw bone. Go home and and get your things and I will meet you at the hospital. You are going to have to stay there for 2 weeks." My face just dropped!

She went on to say, "don't worry, I will order some good pain medication."

So, you could have an infection, too, if all of the self remedies have not relieved it. At the time is was a mystery why I got the infection. I thought it was from all the IVSM I had received that summer and my neuro agreed. But, since you have these symptoms after starting Ty, I'm starting to suspect there is a relationship between Ty and the infection. Both steroids and Ty lower the immune system. Suppressed immune system =infection.

This is an old thread, but, if you still have that pain, I recommend that you get a CT or MRI.

                      Little update again

^ Started calling docs everywhere from the moment I read your post, thinking that would be it!

But I went to another doctor, she couldn't find out what it was. She said there is no bacterial infection (checked my blood) so she sent me to this jaw doctor. I then went to my dentist, to make sure it's nothing with my teeth and my dentist said one of my wisdom tooth was inflamed. So she gave me a AB cure but -sadly- I'm almost done with that and there is still no progression. She said that if the AB isn't doing anything I'd have to go to this jaw specialist.

Oh man, no one knows what I have -help haha.

Btw: does anyone here know if you can miss a month of the Tysabri? I feel my body is just fighting too many infections and just has no time to heal so perhaps it would be better to skip this month... Infection on my eye, infection on my jaw, on my wisdom tooth, infection in my rib muscles and an infection on my tailbone (cyst). So yeah, poor body.

                        Hi Dexter,

Your journey sounds a little bit like mine. I don't think regular antibiotics will treat a bone infection(if that's what you have). I was in the hospital on IV antibiotics with an infectious disease specialist on board. Then I had to do IV antibiotics at home for 2 more weeks and a month of sure strong oral antibiotics. I wish I could remember the names of these things. The past is is all a blur.

It's hard to find a doctor who will take the time to dig into this and find the answer. You may have to travel to a different city. I will pick my brain. If I can remember the details, I will write back.

The infectious disease specialist was Dr. Alan Morgenstein in Glendale, California.

Much appreciated, but I don't live in America so I'm afraid I'll have to check another doctor here... My dentist is going to refer me to a specialist tomorrow but he is just a jaw specialist. I don't even think we have infectious disease specialists here lol. Let me check!

But darn, it really sucks knowing I took this AB literally for nothing as it wasn't effective.
