Anyone else training their own service dog?

I just rescued a Great Pyrenees dog that I'm training to be my balance dog. He's young and full of energy but sweet and smart and big and strong and doing really well so far. I'm using some training videos posted by a kind Canadian woman on YouTube, along with guide dog/CGC guidelines. We're using a clicker and target training. Is anyone else doing this? Would love to compare notes and progress!

    Hi Poppy,

I'm currently looking for a rescue dog for this purpose, so a bit behind you. Good luck. I'd love to hear about it and will share when I have anything to talk about.

Good for you -- are you trying for a dog from a non-profit group, or adopting on your own? There is a group in MA that donates balance Great Danes to those with conditions like MS but the process would have taken too long for me...

Adopting my own. I got some very useful advice on a different thread from a member here.

We have a non profit nearby that assists vets with traumatic brain injury to train their own service dog. I will be consulting with them and hopefully attending some of their classes.

Oh, that's excellent! Can't wait to hear more. I did a quick search of the forums for keywords related to service dogs but I'll look again for that thread.

Not much to tell just yet and may not be for a while.

Just a cowgirl was the member who offered advice and help. The thread is in the general questions section called balance dogs and the first post was September 9 2012.

I have been following this thread with interest as I'd love to have a service dog, but dh says absolutely no to any dog!

(our cats would probably say no as well!)

Tell him you're covered under the ADA? No?! Well darn it!

Thank you very much for the links and info. I just found this wonderful video today, done by a man with MS in Maine who used to train sled dogs but now trains his own balance dog.

I watched his entire video- what a great partnership he´s created. It is inspiring. Don´t know if I have what it would take to train the pooch though.

It's an inspiring video, isn't it? I like how he emphasizes taking things slowly, and getting a friend to help in the first stages, and remembering the relationship is the important thing, not how perfect your dog performs the tasks. As long as they're helpful to you, that's good enough!
