Hi I'm Jeff, 28, Ontario, Canada

Hi guys, first time delving into a community for support/info/conspiracy theories (sure why not)

So this started back in May, surprisingly when I quit drinking and smoking. I started to get weird vision when going from light to dark. No when I was ~22 the retinas in both my eyes started detaching and after a year of treatment and eventual surgery, my eyes are... as good as they can be. So when this started I thought nothing of it. I also read that pressure in your eyes can change when you quit smoking.

A few weeks later I started to have a lack of balance. Again, I read that can happen when you quit smoking.

Weeks went by and my feet started to go numb. That's when I saw my doctor. I had blood tests that were negative. A CT scan (MRI avoided because eyes). Negative.

After those two tests, my doctor said that they just don't know although worst case scenario is MS. Neurologist appt next. Scheduled MRI and evoked potential.

After those, I had to see my doctor again because of headaches. Tylenol does nothing, only Advil helps. And my balance had gotte worse along with other numbness. He called MRI place to get my test faxed over (this was only the next week after the MRI) and said he's '98% its our worst fear' He had an appt with the neurologist 2 days later.

When I briefly saw neurologist he told me that with the MRI and evoked potential, I am showing 'a significant sign of advanced stages of MS-- for my age'

What does that mean? Its been almost 4 weeks since I was diagnosed, they're slow ha. But I was assured I am on an Urgent/ASAP list for the MS specialist at a hospital. But the symptoms just keep getting worse.

I also notice psychological and behavioral symptoms
    • I have very poor short term memory for a month now.
    • I also ramble on&on, explaining this post haha.
    • I also laugh hysterically at anything remotely funny, is that a sign of PBA?

So as you can tell I've got so many questions. Sorry for being long winded

Hi and welcome. I hope you can get some answers soon.

What is interesting is that I was a heavy smoker for years and when I quit five years ago, symptoms started cropping up (hemiparesis, spasticity, overall weakness, fatigue, etc.). Weird, right?

Very interesting. i read on another social network last night of someone experiencing the same; symptoms immedeatly after quitting smoking.

ah well, maybe some correlation, not enough for corroboration.

Also in Ontario, Canada ... I didn't quit smoking but I almost completely cut out sugar and was in the middle of losing 40 pounds when all my initial sx started. SO glad I decided to "get healthy" in 2013 ... although I'm sure it's a coincidence. Maybe.

My SO jokes that I shouldn't have quit!

But I did ask my first (general) neuro and he said that stress can get the ball rolling. I'm kind of thinking he was on to something even though he diagnosed me incorrectly with ADEM.

Hi and welcome! We don't have many answers here but we do understand.

I wonder if any kind of stress might trigger a flare in someone susceptible to MS? Quitting smoking and drinking was likely stressful to your particular system.

My first flare came about when I was doing the Atkins diet. I only wanted to lose 5 pounds and I think maybe the stress of being ketotic caused my body to become unglued. I'm sure I would have gotten MS anyway but find it interesting that was when it first showed itself.

              Thank you to everyone!

A bit of situational irony if they can be related. I quit drinking first, because I knew I wouldn't stop smoking unless I did.

Ya, I quit those two things in hopes of getting healthy. I haven't had a single sip to drink or smoke since May now, don't plan on changing that either. I can't help but finding it a bit humorous if its one day shown that the quitting stress may have caused this.... HA!

When I was first diagnosed, at about your age, a doctor actually said to me, "Don't worry about quitting smoking, with what you've got, you won't want a long life."

I was slightly gobsmacked, and I quit anyway, but all these years later, I can kind of see his point.

Don't worry too much about the "significant signs of advanced MS, for your age". My first MRI looks exactly the same as my last MRI - this is 16 years on. Neuro said severe MS time this time, no one said that first time.

Within about three day of drastically reducing my sugar intake (had pre-diabetic blood work) I started with a six week bout of trigeminal neuralgia. Ummm.

Sad, because despite the healthy crazy I've made some really good progress over the year ... now I've stalled ...
