When I was still working my employer was excellent. No question about disclosure because when I was out on sick leave waiting for all the tests to come back, my boss called and having never heard of MS I blabbed everything to him.
Fortunately for me another person at the plant had been dx'd just a couple months before me.
The H.R. department strongly recommended I sign up for intermittant leave when I came back.
I couldn't have asked for a nicer last job.

          disclose

I would normally never in a million years encourage anyone to disclose a diagnosis, but reading your posts I think you should.

There are some real poopy employers out there. Our problems come in having to deal with them. Can't change them - not your job.

If you disclose and they start using ms weaknesses such as cognitive issues against you, you can smile and ask for suggestions or help.

You know these people, throw it back at them in the most polite professional manner. You lose your cool, then you're 'emotional' and 'unrational'. Ask them point blank if they think you shouldn't be working because you have MS? Stop talking and watch them stumble.

If there is anything you haven't asked for, but should have do it!!! Do you need a longer lunch to rest? Do you need a ergonomic assessment etc.

They can't pick on you if you are disabled, they can pick on you if they think you need to be removed. Time to muddy the water and throw in 'disability' to the mix maybe?

Reading your posts it strikes me that you are very eager to speak with someone, unload and have a meaningful, helpful conversation. Perfectly understandable. This isn't that place. For many of us our hands are sore and can't type for long - this is an investment. You can speak to someone if your company has a 'family counselling' package, you can also call the local ms society and ask about a support group or counselling services they offer. I'd go with the ms soc first, they'll have heard your story before and can offer more customized help.

Watch out for anger. Please post back and let us know how things worked out, good or bad, so we can all learn from this.

              Update

Well, MSnerd, you made some valid points. I am not really sure of disclosing, as I can still carry out the majority of tasks.

This job really involves just sitting, servicing clients, and maybe 15 minutes out of the day, it gets busy. The last few months haven't been bad, but I already went on a 2 month fmla leave last year.

I have been battling fatigue, and have been thinking of asking for accomodations. I mean, I go to my car on lunch break, which is across the streat, and I usually take a nap or just lie down and close my eyes. is that crazy!!??

There are other people, such as my coworker, who leaves work every day at 2pm, since she has kids. I'm not sure that I could do that, but a longer break would be good.

As of today, I was working in our back office for 5 years, mainly just working with our 5 member team. For the past week, they moved me to the front of the branch, where I have been away from my previous team, and put there to help others. I don't feel that I am in jeopardy of losing my job, but I must say, I am definitely seeking other opportunities....while working!

On the subject of employment.......I have been with the same company and same position for 28yrs. Being newly dx I have had several Dr. appt. When I ask for time off for an appt. I'm docked hrs. This week I only got 19hrs. I feel this isn't right and am also feeling hurt by their selfishness. Anyone else go through this or have suggestiongs for me? TJ

Do you have any sick/personal days?

Usually, you have vacation or personal time that you can take, before you get docked.

I used all of my vacation, sick and persoanal days, and at that time, I wasn't paid for the days off.

                  Hope this helps./

                    elevator guy

I work as an elevator constructor in NYC it is a very physically demanding job. I've been diagnosed with ms for a little over a year. Was forced to tell my employer about my condition due to the amount of days I had to take off (doctors appointments and tests). Fortunately I am a union member and they is only so much that they can do. But I always feel that I have to outwork everybody. When your in the construction trade bad days have to be kept to yourself. ............
