A few months ago, a doctor asked me "Are you sure, you have ms?". I looked at him with a big question mark in my eyes and he said: "Well, you can walk to good."

It's no question, this was the last time the doc will see me, isn't it?

I haven't been able to work since April - lost my job at the beginning of July - get a call from my (former) manager on Friday:

how are you feeling? (like crap)

isn't the medicine working yet? (didn't even get it yet)

Well, I'll put a note in my calendar to call you every three months and see if you're feeling better yet. ( - does he realize he's not even my manager anymore and in three months, I won't even be associated with the company?)

          Mother-in-law said...

First my mother-in-law said.."I am tired all the time, I think I have MS"...she's 78.

Then she proceeds to tell me "I knew so-and-so, they had MS..they are dead now. So when are you going to die?" My reply to that was "After I spend everything Lance (my hubby) inherits from you!"

When I tell someone I have MS, I always get, "oh, no...I'm so sorry. But you don't look sick."

My reply (because I can) is, "Oh, we all look alike."

I was seeing a GI dr for the very first time, and I mentioned that I had MS - he said "oh no, you dont have MS- you dont look like you have MS" and was much more concerned about my marital status than my symtoms. Yeah, I didnt see him again either.

The other beauty I got from a dr when I couldnt produce urine for a test - "well just drink a lot of water"...and when Im headed home with no access to a toilet, will you be the one I send the cleaning bill too? I asked. Sometimes, it's like they have no clue as to what MS is or what it does. I might expect that from other people not from drs, but these days...

These are awesome stories. I've heard so many of these comments and questions, over and over. Most of the time I answer with thank you, or I feel fine, etc. Because that's really what they want to hear.

The best comment I had came from another doctor. I had some tests done for some respiratory issues I was having and it was a workers comp issue. So the SAIF doctor wanted all of my medical records, which included my neuro stuff. In his report he stated there were no tests done to properly diagnose my MS, that it was simply the neuro's "opinion." So, therefore, as a qualified pulmonologist, his assessment was that I did not have MS.

So, in a sarcastic voice I asked, "so does that mean I've been cured?"

I believe I also asked him what field of medicine he practiced. For some reason he didn't like me very well.

My experience with stupid things people said

I was at the ER for an exacerbation. The lab tech came in to draw blood and said, "So your here for your Multiple Sclerosis", I said "Yes", he said "You would think with all the fundraising Jerry Lewis has done all these years we would of found a cure by now." Feeling terrible and not surprised by the lack of knowledge by another medical professional my reply was" Ya, you would think"

one of the most annoying things I've been told

I had one lady who I worked with once tell me after a very big flare that require two months hospitalization. She said "you know I used to work in a nursing home and when they stopped their Physical Therapy they thought they were doing great and then they would slowly go into a what do you call it Flare up. So I really think you should keep your therapy going so you don't flare up again." she said this like she knew everything and this was after I got the ok from the doctors that I could Discontinue PT and OT. I just looked at her and stopped her mid sentence and explained to her that it's not the same thing.

                        ENT Visit

Five minutes into my first visit with an ENT specialist he said he didn't see any reason for me to be diagnosed with MS. I felt like walking out the door at that exact moment!

                          These are Great!

Here are a few of mine:

                          - A new GP came in looking desheveled in a lab coat and pants she could go clam digging in. She spent an entire 5 to 10 minutes with me while she was also speaking to a nurse about another patient in the hall. Asked me a few like 3 or 4 ?s and exclaimed that I in fact did not have MS. She is not my new GP.

                          - My Mother who is very supportive and God knows she only wants to help called the other day and said there was a bit on the news about a cure for MS. HOLD YOU BREATH. It's as simple as buying a mattress cover with magnets in it.

                          - A very good friend of mine and my husband telling me that I need to exercise and I will feel better. I tell them it's hard to exercize when my leg starts to go numb and a limp appears after a simple trip to the store.

                          - You should drink juices like Montel. Oh and I am informed since I am looking into applying for disability he gets up and goes to work everyday. Well he also smokes pot and has the money for anything else that might make him feel better (to include his juicer LOL). And by the way he works like what an hour a day on his show. Sorry if I don't see the comparison. Sorry for any Montel fans out there.

                          - My friend again. I know someone with MS in Texas. She still goes out and parties and is doing great, just look at her face book page. Me: I am happy for her but that's not the way it's going for me.

I have also heard the "you don't look sick", "just quit thinking about it and you will feel better", and my most favorite "you can still walk, that doesn't stop you from working".

                            since 2006

This is funny you are asking for such information because I was just talking to my family about things people say today.......

I am currently out of work on FMLA for a flare that started 5 months ago. I called work to check in and my secretary asked "aren't you all better yet?"

Pain throughout my back and shoulders is my newest complaint. Last week I was telling my dad how this pain has been continuous for 5 months now and that I wished something helped. His reply was "when I was your age I had a really bad herniated disc and until I had surgery 3 years later I was in severe pain. When you hit 3 years then let me know, a few months is nothing."

I work in a hospital and speak to the docs often. I was telling a doctor about how bad my pain has gotten. They looked confused and asked "can MS really cause pain?"

And my all time favorite "You look good today are you sure you have MS?"

                              It's a gender thing

I had an older relative say to me....

"Well if you'd acted more lady-like, you wouldn't have this problem! You've been fighting all those fires, and driving trucks, and galivating all over the country to those disaster thingies. That is a mans' job! You just need to settle down and be more feminine and you'll see, it will all go away.

To which my DH replied with a wink....."Umm...trust me! Every inch of her is very feminine, and I love kissing every one of them."

My relative blushed and quickly changed the subject. :-)

The one my boss uses all the time is; we all have these issues when we get older. It could be that's all you have going on.
