I'm sorry no one replied but I guess they don't know the answer so you will probably have to do research outside of the MS arena.

Have you talked to any hiring managers for events or security agencies?

Where I work, hospitals, I haven't seen any security guards that were in wheelchairs. I would imagine that even if you were watching a monitor you might have to go apprehend a suspect if you saw something suspicious? I don't know. Maybe the casino industry has a need for people to watch a monitor?

Start investigating if this is what you really want to do. Here is a link to a professional organization that might be able to offer info. http://www.nasco.org/
          Good luck.

            Hey slowdog,

I am new to the site or I would have responded sooner. In your profile it said that you are in KS. You will need to get a PI license for the most opportunities (MS brain will not let me remember off the top of my head how to do it but a Google search will help). Security officers generally are expected to walk and stand and lift heavy objects not just watch the monitors. I looked into doing something similar several years ago and was told that unless I could do all those functions I was out of luck. So I took my many pre-MS years as a real investigator and went on to work part time as a legal investigator for law firms and insurance companies after obtaining a PI license. You get to sit in a car for 12 hours at a time to take pictures/videos and document insurance fraud and the like. It was an almost perfect post-MS job for me.

              Just a reply

TechDad, awesome response to a problem. You found a creative way around any limitation...As for the Security Guard position - I've read this post multiple times. I have to give the original poster props for being persistent - he did not give up on his question and a lot of times, people do.
In my experience, security guards are expected to be able to perform the entire job...rarely (to my knowledge, never) is the entire job just watching a screen. Like TechDad said - many other requirements are there up front.
I'm sorry to be a downer on your dream - I really am. It's important to have that thing that you want - and obviously you have the tenacity (sp?) to do anything you want.
Don't know where to go from this point in my reply. You do what you want/can. Ultimately, it's you - whether you proceed as planned or get creative. I hope you find it fulfilling and wonderful!

                    Slowdog,

I was a security guard 30 years ago and all I had to do was get fingerprinted, have no arrests and be in the posession of a warm body.

I used to trade off 12 hour shifts with an idiot who used to sleep all night (perhaps I was the idiot for staying up all night in the days before internet, with nothing to do).

I know an 80yo guy who is a security guard. There are different kinds of guards - the protecting sort, who carry weapons and the reporting sort, whose job is to just alert someone if there is a problem.

Finally, there must be the kind of jobs where you watch monitors. You might convince an employer that you will be more dedicated and work harder than the average guard. call your local MS society and let them help you find out. Meanwhile, you can do research into the different roles.

This position is in the wrong KS, but you can see there are some that don't require a license - you can search in your town.

After working mainly as a truck driver and a warehouse worker and being DXed in the middle of it all,I thought I would never be any good for anything for anyone.I am now in a wheelchair a good part of the day's well I went through a online training course for 6 weeks and now have my own company and doing well and making as much money as I want so I do not go over my allowed amount SSDI sucks.I love having my own business it is great to set my own hours and everything and be my own boss I call it Rollin On Logistics look me up.
