Hand Controls & Drivers License WA

    Hi

Has anyone else had problems trying to keep thier drivers license in Washington State after restricting themselves to hand controls for driving. I felt two years ago that my reflexes were not good enough to continue driving without having hand controls so I restricted myself and I had to get a doctor to sign off on a paper saying that I could drive safely with hand controls. Now after two years the state sent me a new form for the doctor to fill out and now the same doctor will not fill out and sign the form and I can't seem to find a new to sign the form even though nothing has changed for me in the two years.

What really makes me mad is I know a person that can not even read thier mail or read the road signs didn't have to have a doctor say they could drive and thier eyes even got worse was able to take the driving test and get thier drivers license. Not fair!!!!!

Sorry about being so mad but I can't help it when it seems so unfair when I can't even take the driving test and keep my drivers license.

    Good ole WA LOL!

You need to find out why your doc wont sign the forms. That is wrong unless he has a reason for not signing them.

As for the person who cant see worth a darn, if they pass the eye exam machine thing at the licensing office..they pass. I just took mine as I had to change my license from military over to regular as my hubby is retiring (yeah happy dance!) All you have to do is look in the machine thing and read off the colors, shapes, and letters.

RE: Hand Controls & Drivers License WA

      Thank your for your reply.

I found out the doctor was worried about a my son might suing if I had an accident, so I told him that if my son ever thought to sue him that I would come back as a flying elephant and **** all over him. This doctor has helped me more than anyother doctor I have every had. The doctor came over to my house and filled out and sign out the DMV paper work and signed it, What a releaf, I live in the country and there is know public transportion here. He beleives that I have a good chance of having MS but he has had no luck trying to find a neurologist that will check me out enough to find out for shure.

Thank you again for the reply.

Go after the state of Kansas useing ADA

I would go after Kansas State use the ADA law, asking for resonable accommidations. I have checked the National Transpartation Department as to the safety of hand controls and as of 4 months ago they had no accedents caused by driving with hand controls and hand controls have been around I know before 1958.

Try to get the MS group there and national, as well as the NSCIA involved in the fight. NSCIA also deals with diseases of the spinal cord which includes MS of the spinal cord.

            Good Luck,
            Jeff

REALLY? In this wonderful state where the incident of MS is so great, I find it hard to believe that your Dr. can't find a neuro to test you/check you out?

There are lots of MS specialist in Seattle and if you do some searching here on MSW, there was a post asking for recommendations in the Seattle area. I can't be of help in recommending one as I live farther away.

Sometimes, we need to be our own advocates - especially if our doctors come to a standstill.

              Good luck, Jeff!

                Doctors

                Hi!

Thank you for your comment, I was first sent to a neuro surgeon, because I had a spinal tumor at C5-C6 which paralyzed me from the neck down in 1958. He called me a lier and said that the doctor that removed the tumor caused me to be paralyzed me that was not the only thing told me I was lying about he didn't believe what I had accomplished on my own, plus remember all that had happened. Was made mad enough to write and tell he was wrong, was I told him that it was not right to defame the doctor that had saved my life and I wanted to have that removed from the record. The doctor that removed 2 years after the surgery taught neuro surgery in Germany, France, and when he returned taught here in the U.S.A.

His responce was to black balled me with anyone that had a specialty in neurology in Spokane, WA. I was told this by a doctor that has helped a great deal through the years when he did some checking by not using my name just a discription of my pased problems, every one told that the neuro sergeon I had told them not to see me. My doctor and I have been friends for years and he thinks that I may have MS, but he is a DO and it would take a neurologist to make that diagnosis.

So if I can, I will have to try out of state to get a good evaluation.

Again thank you for your comment,
                Jeff

I would get ahold of the doctor that signed it in the first place & go in & talk to him & find out why all of a sudden he's refusing to sign the form when he did before. I also live in WA & I have found some doctors just don't want to get involved any longer. You may ask him if he wants to continue to be your doctor.

If a person is driving with poor eyesight then I think I would call the motor vehicles dept & let them know.

                  Good Luck
