    Having a hard time urinating...HELP!!

I cannot empty my bladder. I will start to tinkle and then it shuts off, starts again, shuts off. I have the feeling of a full bladder but I cannot completely empty it. Also the same somewhat with my bowels too...I only go maybe every 2-3 days and it seems like it just shuts off and I am not empty. The bladder thing scares me because of infection UTI and such. Please help has anyone had this and what do I do about it???

I'm sorry you are having to deal with that. But I get it completely I've been going through the same thing, I started drinking Activia, and soaking in warm baths and that seems to help. Also you can call your Dr. and they can do a test that will tell you how much your bladder is functioning. So you might call Dr. and see what he says. Hope you get some relief soon.

I think you need to see a urologist for this.

BUT while you are waiting for an appt, try taking 400 mg magnesium 2X/day. Magnesium is a natural muscle relaxer and may help with the emptying issues. Also, it can loosen bowels. Based on my personal experience, muscle spasms may be causing these issues.

HUGS. I don't have the bowel issue, but I definately have the issue with the bladder. I just cannot do it. It is not cool. HUGS. I am going up to see the MS doc on Friday, I guess I will have them check me for a UTI then. Sigh. I am sorry you are dealing with it too.

One thing that works for me ...after I urinate and think I have finished, I stand up and then sit back down on the seat. It never fails that I continue going again. Many times I can tell that my bladder has finally emptied. Sometimes I do the stand-up, sit-down routine several times before I feel like my bladder is empty. Actually heard this trick from a MS specialist. Good Luck, it is frustrating.

              YES SASHA!!

Yeppers ladies that is soooo frustrating. Yesturday I ended up going to the dr thinking I had a UTI or something and they checked me out. NO UTI OR ANYTHING. UGH. So I guess I get to blame the darn ol' MS. Ya know though, at least I can blame it on something now verses thinking it was all in my head as it has been the past 10 years lol.

Whoo-Hoo It's NOT all in my head!!
(wow, I think I'm loosing it, lol just kidding)

                Forgot to add this info.

I am on Copaxone and the dr. yesturday looks up Copaxone in her trusty little book of drugs and right there it says Copaxone may cause increased feelings of urgency in urination!!! WELL THERE YA GO!! Been on Copaxone for 2 weeks, no wonder it's happening. LOL!

I mentioned the start/stop urinary cycle to my neuro on Wednesday and she ordered a U/A (which was negative), and suggested a urology consult and possibly urodynamics testing. My husband used to work as a urology nurse and did urodynamics, he said it is not a fun test to go through and that they probably can't do much to correct anything that is neurologically caused. So now I'm in a quandary about whether or not to do the urology consult, because I don't really see the start/stop thing as being too problematic... just a minor annoyance (esp at night when I seem to sit there for a long time). I'm thinking about hanging on to the consult and waiting to see if things develop further...

MS is also very likely to cause these kind of problems.

Golfwidow, thanks for the great tip, I'm going to try it. Sometimes if I gently push on my lower abdomen it seems to stimulate a bit more to come out. I rarely feel like I have to go more but then 10 minutes later I have to go again.

I live with this all the time. Bladder and bowels, what fun. I feel like I have UTI's all the time and then it will go away. I take cranberry pills and powdered magnesium. I really think it helped at first but the same old symptoms are back again. I have spinal lesions and from what I read, they can really mess up bladder and bowel function. I have to say it is really frustrating and getting worse especially around my period but at least I can get on this board and vent!!!

I had bladder problems with frequency and urgency, off and on feelings of UTI, etc.

Consulted with a urogynecologist and did some testing and symptom tracking/food diary and discovered that I have IC (Interstitial Cystitis), which is an autoimmune disorder of the bladder. It is completly unrelated to my MS - although it is another autoimmune issue and once you have one, you are more prone to others.

Suggest you consult with a urologist You may be able to get some relief of your symptoms depending on diagnosis.

I was diagnosed with MS about 4 months before I got the tentative IC diagnosis. I had been having bladder problems off and on for 4 or 5 years before that.

I have had both bladder and bowel problems intermittently. I like the standing up and sitting back down trick, I'll have to try it! With urination, I usually have a harder time getting started than getting re-started but both can be difficult. For getting started, sometimes I try flushing or sometimes imagining the sound of urine hitting the water. It can help, but usually I just have to wait.

As far as starting a bowel movement, I have a couple tricks for that also but they're not for the faint of heart. I start by applying external pressure at the base of the gluteal cleft. If that doesn't work, I try digital rectal stimulation (DRS or dig stim). If you have gloves, great. If you don't, you can wrap a finger carefully in TP or just use the paper itself. Internal stimulation of the rectum is what healthcare providers use for neurogenic bowel. Before getting that far, it is important to keep regular and relatively loose. Eat your fiber, drink plenty of water, and take some bowel meds if you need them!

Consider it, it just might work.

                            Bladder/Bowel Problems

I have both. For the bladder problem, I went to the Urologist, did the whole testing thing. He prescribed Flomax (an off-label use). It's been working well for the last two years (relaxes the sphincter). I'm now on the generic version. Still working on the other problem.

I was having that problem too. What I did and it helped me was: I stopped drinking milk and caffeine. I now drink Rice Dream (it is like rice milk) and water. Once in a while I will drink Herbal teas. ---- I also take a spoon of Cod Liver oil before my evening meal. And, drink a spoon full of CALM ( a magnesium supplement) for my bowels. ---- Hope this information helps.
