    So confused.. JC virus?

I have been on Tec since May with an intermission because of an insurance screw up. I had to go back to the half dose because of some gastro issues. I thought I would work my way up again but.....

My Neuro called me Friday and told me I tested positive for
the JC virus. Because I am A-fib I can't take a lot of the other
meds. If any of you are taking Tec and are JC positive I would so appreciate any input.

    Thank you very much.
And even though the moment passed me by I still can't turn away

I'm on Tecfidera because I tested JCV+. I was on Tysabri, and when I tested positive my doctor told me to stop gettig infusions and wait for BG12 (Tec) to be approved.

Testing positive is a contraindication for Tysabri patients; if you are JCV+ then your likelihood of getting PML (a potentially fatal neurological disease).

      GooGooGirl,

Here is a thread that may explain your neuro's concern.

Keep us posted about what your neuro says. Wishing you the best!

Thanks so much. I am making an appointment with my neuro this week. I feel very overwhelmed.

I need him to explain some things to me about my options

By the way, is your Neurologist an MS Specialist?
MS Specialists are very knowledgeable on this things, as they treat many hundreds or over 1000 MS patients.

It's fairly straightforward to find an MS Specialist in major metro areas. I rural areas, many go to Neurologists with experience treating MS.

This is a good link to find Neurologists/MS Specialists near where you live, if in the U.S.:

Jcv positive is not a contraindications for any of the meds except tysabri. I have been on all of the oral drugs after being taken off Tysabri because of being positive. Good luck but I wouldn't worry

                  Tec CAN cause PML.

Actually, Tecfidera can potentially cause PML. It, along with monomethyl fumarate, is also part of a psoriasis drug called Fumaderm, which has caused many cases of PML. (Not nearly as many as Tysabri.)

It drops white blood counts cell counts, which can give rise to such opportunistic infections as PML. It also works by inducing an anti-inflammatory response by depletion of a major antioxidant called glutathione, which helps to fight off many things in the body, including the JC virus.

Not trying to fearmonger. Just sharing research.

I saw that before I started Tec. But my MS Neuro does not agree. As long as they keep tabs on your WBC. There have been no cases of Pml related. To Tecfidera.
                    Good luck

On the thread above, please watch the video from the CMSC MS Conference about the new JCV Index titer test.

If you've already seen this, please excuse the repeat. (There are lots of new people on this thread.)

                      Thanks Everyone!
