Need a new neurologist - Knoxville, TN area

I need to find a new neurologist in the Knoxville, TN area. My old one, for whatever reason, never calls me back with test results. I had a VEP July 15 and have called three times. She still hasn't read the test or given me the results. I finally called the hospital where I had the test done and they had the staff neurologist read the test. They're going to call me when I can pick up a copy of it.

I think I need a doctor with a fresh perspective on what's going on. Any suggestions for this area would be appreciated.

Cut aspartame from my diet in 2012 and my symptoms have slowly disappeared. Interesting!
Alpha Lipoic Acid (200 mg) + Acetyl L-carnitine (1,000 mg) = No more fatigue for me!

I only know names but nothing about the quality of care these doctors give....
    Mohammad I Hussain M.D. - Neurology Rehabilitation
Sibyl Wray M.D - Hope Neurology
Upper East TN - see Stephen Kimbrough, but I imagine that's a little further than you wold like to go

Thanks, woohoogirl. I've actually been seeing Dr. Sibyl Wray for the past five years. She's the one not calling me back with test results. (I'm having to go to the hospital to pick up the copy of the report today. It's been two weeks since the test.) I've tried to give her the benefit of the doubt and thought maybe she was on vacation or out of town, but even then, the nurse could call me back and let me now that.

I'll check out the other doctors you mentioned. Maybe one of them would be able to review my documentation and give me an opinion. (Five T2 hyperintense lesions, a documented case of mild ON by an neuro-ophthalmologist, and a ton of symptoms should warrant some sort of response.)

        Knox Neuro

I've been to Hope Neurology before too. I feel like they are too busy, and treat me like I am incompetent. I LOVE my neurologist. His name is Dr. Brian Wiseman and his office is on Sutherland Ave. His nurse, Erika, always gets back with me ASAP, they are just fantastic. Hope this helps!

Thanks! I'll check and see if Dr. Wiseman is on my insurance plan.

I've been with Hope Neurology for about five years, and at times the NP has made some really snide remarks like, "You've been tired ever since I've known you" when I was telling her about the fatigue I was dealing with. (Before I found ALA and ALC.) And once when I was saying how annoying the buzzing and tingling and bug biting sensations were, she said, "Everybody, and I mean everybody, experiences feelings like that." She also dismissed the lesions on my MRI as being caused by high blood pressure, even though my blood pressure has never been excessively high, and Dr. Wray said they may be MS lesions.

I like Dr. Wray well enough, but it's really difficult to get in to see her. She's very busy and seems to always be traveling to Italy for conferences. I once had an appointment with her that had been made 8 months previously, and they called the day before and cancelled it because she was on-call. I ended up on the work-in list and it took another 4 months to get me in.

I just feel like I need to find someone who can look at all the pieces of the puzzle and hopefully put them all together.

Anyway, thanks again. I'll check out Dr. Wiseman.

Cool! I think you'll like him. He is a really good listener and has always been great to me. I've been with him since my diagnosis in 2008. His nurse Erika is amazing too.

My family encouraged me to go to Hope Neurology since they are the only "MS Specialists" in Knoxville and I just didn't "mesh" with them. Like you, my appointments were always cancelled the day before and rescheduled for months later...and once rescheduled again.

I take Tysabri and of course have concerns about taking a drug with a PML risk. The doctor I saw at Hope Neuro told me that driving my car was just as dangerous as taking Tysabri. So, if I was willing to drive, then I should be okay with taking Tysabri....the risk is the same...... (What kind of statistic is that anyway!?)

They didn't like that I was familiar with current MS research and the drugs available for MS. They wanted me to take what they said and not ask any questions. I always felt like it was an argument.

Dr. Wiseman gives me his advice and opinions then lets me make the choice. It took ME a long time to welcome the idea of Tysabri, he didn't force me, he let me think about it and when I was ready I called and they set it up :-)

              Good luck!
              :-)

YEAH.. I think you are on your way~

Like the post that says she thinks VEPs are a waste of time. I was told that it WAS part of the diagnosing tests but not anymore.

                      Let us know ok?

                        new neuro

Sounds like you have a good neurologist ahead in your future.

I changed mine this year as well ... a friend of my sister told me to go to the big city and see an MS neurologist, and I did, and am happy with the switch.

                        Wishing you the best ahead

Angel, I'm going to call tomorrow to see if I can get an appointment and I'll let you know how he is.

And thanks everyone. I looked this doctor up online at one of those doctor rating sites. He had good ratings except for one person who totally trashed him. It was because she's had MS symptoms, and her GP and ENT told her they thought it was MS, but she didn't have any lesions on her MRI, so Dr. Wiseman wouldn't diagnose her with MS and she was upset about it. Evidently, she's never heard of the McDonald criteria. So, I'm not taking her opinion too seriously.

I called to make the appointment with Dr. Wiseman and the lady that took the call recommended that I see a different doctor within the practice, Dr. Trudell. She said that he is their MS specialist. My appointment is Sept. 6 at 11 a.m. (which is the same day I have to drop my SUV off at the body shop to finally get the hail damage from April 27 fixed.) I'm going to be busy that day!

I'm wondering if I should call back and change the appointment back to Dr. Wiseman or if this other doctor will be okay. (I hate trying to pick a doctor! You just never know who you're going to get!)

In other news, I posted about my cataract surgery yesterday. I'm having the cataract in my right eye taken out on August 25. It's the same eye that had the ON. The neuro-ophthalmologist told me that my vision may not be totally clear because of the damage from the ON. But it sure couldn't be any worse than it is now. I feel like I'm looking through a dirty window. Anything would be an improvement!

Guess I'll just go with it all and see what happens. Thanks everyone.
