Sleeping on a boat? Nope just MS ...

Anyone else have this problem? Lately when I lay down it feels as though I'm sleeping on a boat ... feeling as if everything around me is moving when my eyes are closed.

This has happened before many times but I was curious if anyone else experiences this and if yes what do you do to relieve or get rid of it ... if possible.

I know take take one of those patches for sea sickness ... lol, just teasing.

Suggestions would be great ... Thank you!

Hi Brittan: I have that dizziness feeling both with my eyes open and closed, but it is worse with them closed. Believe it or not, the scapolomine patches might help, or you can try meclizine. My docs give me Valium for the dizziness and it works the best so far.

I would consult with them for the best treatment because this is definitely part of your MS, or a small chance it could be an inner ear problem. Either way, you need to talk to the doc about it and the treatment is about the same.

I hope you feel better soon...the feeling is miserable I know.

    Take care

      Hello Lisa,

I'll take a valium before bed tonight and see if it helps. Keeping my fingers. It gets to the point I feel like I'm going to throw up ... it is annoying.

The funny thing is when I jumped in bed last night I was thinking about those sea sick patches and you answered my question. If the valium doesn't work I'll try that...lol.

When I talk to my neuro at the end of July I will bring up this and the other symptoms I've been experiencing again...lol.

Lol! The many symptoms of MS ... what fun, huh?

I like your signature's quote ... so true, I try to laugh at everything it is the best way to handle stress.

When I fall into walls I just say 'who put that there?' and start laughing.

When my leg doesn't work I just say 'It didn't get the memo' ... lol.

I take it as it comes which is the best way I think.

I tend to laugh when I'm stressed. It seems that the more I stress, the more I fumble.

I remember chocking on a sip of water... first day, first five minutes on the job. I couldn't stop chocking and it drew everyone's attention. After the chocking stopped, my almost blue face looked up at everyone and stated: "Sorry about that folks! First day with my new mouth!"

I used a similar line when I tripped on air. Now that I'm in a wheelchair and bump into everything and everyone, I just offer them a ride to go with my apology.

That sounds like something that would happen to me..lol. That's what I'll have to say for now on when I choke on my spit ... lol, it happens alot.

I have been telling my husband for about 2 weeks that I feel like I am on a boat especially when I walk into a wall which I do at least once every day

I get the feeling occasionally, but luckily for me, it's pretty rare. I'll have one bad day where I can't get rid of the dizziness, but then the next day I'm perfectly fine. It is so awful to lie down in bed and feel like the entire room is spinning. I hope you find something pretty quickly to help you out.

What side do you fall to? I've read that which ever side you fall to is the side where the lesion is. I always fall to the right/forward when I have flare ups.

Good luck and stay strong ... take it day by day and symptom by symptom.

Exactly, I have been experiencing this for 2 weeks so far and it's getting worse where I feel as though I'm going to vomit. Lucky me, but as suggested by 22cyclist I've taken a valium so I'll give an update tomorrow...keep your fingers crossed.

Well the good news is the valium worked great, the sea sickness was about 90% gone so it was bearable. Thank goodness ... thanks 22cyclists!

This was my presenting symptom and it is now permanent, but is controlled by low dosage Valium.

If it started out as central dizziness and has now progressed into Vertigo (that's what causes you to be seasick), you could be in a flare. If your neuro can't knock out the vertigo to a level where it can be controlled by the Benzo, then steroids might be needed, followed by higher doses of the Valium until stable.

I just came out of a flare with this, but there were a lot more symptoms.

If you do see your neuro, ask for Zofran (the dissolvable kind) for the nausea...works great. Within a couple minutes no more nausea.

Central Dizziness or Vertigo is one of the absolute worst symptoms of MS, IMHO.

                          Good Luck

Thank you KatieAgain for your ray of hope ...lol, just teasing. Thanks for the insight. I know I have been experiencing this for at least 13 years but I must say the past 2 weeks have been a lot worse especially with the feeling of nausea.

I'll be sure to bring this all up to my neuro. I was feeling dizzy throughout the days but not as severe as other times but trying to sleep was excruciating especially with it getting worse. I would have to say falling into walls, the fatigue, mental fog, ms hug, weakness and the sea sickness at night are the worst for me.

I've experienced all of the above in the past two weeks along with severe burning pain in my shoulders/arms but another MSer suggested I take gabapentin for that and that also worked like a charm.

So I now have some relief but because of the ups and downs my hypoglycemia is going out of whack so I'm trying to keep everything under control which is quite stressful. This morning my blood sugar was 46 ... yippee. I started getting soooo shaky.

Hoping this flare stops soon because I need a break. LOL.

Thanks again for the insight, the more knowledge the better especially when talking w/ my neuro.

Wow I thought I was just crazy! I get sea sick in bed too! I also have choked and made a scene in public by coughing uncontrollably! Walking into walls: well I made that my hobby! First day on this sight and I feel better already! Just diagnosed in May and have been on Copaxone for one month! I am grateful for all of your insight!
