I have been struggling with double vision since Thanksgiving, every day pretty much all the time. It has just gotten progressively worse. I went to an opthamologist a month or two ago. He told me his best guess was an astigmatism, but said he had no way to fully prove it wasn't a lesion on my brainstem without an MRI and recommended Lasik surgery if I couldn't learn to live with it. I plan on going to get a second opinion when I can afford it.

I'm sorry you are struggling! The best of luck to you for figuring out a cause!

There are all kinds of things that can cause double vision. In somebody with MS its probably safe to assume that if the double vision started suddenly its probably due to a lesion in a place that controls one of the eye muscles. But it could always be something else too.

I've had double vision a couple of times and both times it got better by itself. No reason to think it was anything but MS. If it hadn't gone away I would have asked my optometrist or neuro-opthalmologist prescribe some prism glasses. No way would I have tried to live with it on my own!

How long have you been seeing double? Have you seen your ophthalmologist about it? That's really the only way to find out what's causing it and see if there's maybe something to be done about it.

They tried prism lenses for me and it did nothing. Not even the slightest bit of help! =(

I don't understand. Your ophthalmologist said your double vision was from astigmatism. Prism isn't for astigmatism so why did you try prism glasses?

I mis-spoke, sorry. I meant he tried lenses to correct my astigmatism, they did not change anything. He also said the refractive test was done wrong. They were supposed to dilate my eyes after the test not before. Even with that being said, my astigmatism is so minute, that it shouldn't cause double vision that doesn't go away.

I go see my new eye doctor on Thursday .....

It doesn't happen all the time ... so now I can live with it ....

It might be from my Optic Neurtitis too .. the steroid seems to help

I only see double when I look left so it is not all the time but it is annoying. The worst is I would go to pick up my glass on my table and would miss it or sit down my glass and miss the table and drop it.

                    LOLOLOLOL at JerryD!!!

I, too, had an episode last year of double vision caused by MS (new lesions). MRI confirmed it. Doctor said it may go away on its own.

The actual episode came-on pretty much overnight. Then, took a good three weeks for me to 'see' (pun intended) any improvement in my vision. During that time, I could not ride in a car without my eyes closed; couldn't watch t.v. or a movie; any form of light hurt (sunshine was painful); walking was tricky, no, VERY tricky; driving was out-of-the-question; couldn't use stairs without holding on to both the rail AND wall; plus, was semi-nauseated the whole time (never did throw-up, whew!). The double vision did finally subside, pretty much completely (about five weeks total time), and hasn't come back, since.

I guess I've been pretty lucky on this, and don't wish it on anyone! It was so scary, so frustrating, very surprising (what now?!?!), quite painful (neck would hurt if I held that one position where it "seemed" to be normal vision), so sad (yes, grieving the loss of yet another skill), so maddening, and, and so, and, and, and so...! I cried a lot during that time.
