learning to knit we’re happy to be here,
gaining a new skill…at MS Camp Can Do…
having different levels, however, we each have a dream,
one to create a pastel baby blanket…
another, a knitted throw for a shut-in; or
a colorful chemo cap for a breast-cancer patient…
two walk up to the knitting table just fine;
maybe it’s her vision; maybe it’s her speech…
she walks to the knitting table leaning on a walker;
no need to hide her ugly shoes and brace under the table here.
she smiles, “ I’m hoping it will keep me from eating!”
another says, “I’m hoping it will strengthen my hand…”
a different one says, “This isn’t easy; maybe it will help me cognitively.”
we each laugh when the teacher speaks of dropping a stitch;
and the funny one cracks a joke about dropping her needles…
rolling up to the table, she talks about knitting a long scarf, but not knowing how to end it; she says it just keeps growing and growing.
sort of like a disease…
We’re ordinary people with extraordinary dreams…
